My wife likes to sunbathe topples. Wondering if their are any places to do that. If she has to wear a suit she has a couple of sheer Wicked Weasel brands she loves to wear. Anyone have any feedback.

There is no legal nude or topless bathing beaches in the VI. However, there are some where it is accepted. Which island will you be on?

In the USVI, it's not allowed, but I have heard that some people go to Solomon Beach for that. Not sure what happens if you get caught, though. Do a search on the site as this was discussed not too long ago.

Or you could try St Martin, where it's allowed on just about any beach.

St. John (No "S") has a few beaches where it is accepted, with Soloman being the most well-known.

From another website:

Solomon's Beach - Known for nude sunbathing, illegal as it may be, Solomon's is a small and enchanting spot under the palms at the base of the trail leading from Cruz Bay town, up to a beautiful panoramic vista, and back down again to Solomon's Bay. (No parking lot for vehicles, and a long walk if you can find it)

Honeymoon Beach - Only several feet and a large boulder away from Solomon's, Honeymoon is more inviting for the clothed visitors lodging at Caneel Bay. These beaches both face St. Thomas and Pillsbury Sound. Rather small but hey, who needs Ocean City anyway. (No parking lot for vehicles, and a long walk if you can find it) Best access is from the Caneel Bay property, make sure you have permission to park your car on their lot, otherwise have a cab drop you off at their cab stand. About a ten minute walk.

Iceman,

Keep everyone posted on which beaches you may log some time at. I'm sure the male contingency on the board would appreciate it.

Always remember to leave of the last "S" in St. John

Enjoy

Thong or sheer (as long as it's not "see thru") is fine for the ladies. NO speedos for men! Cover it up and hide it as best you can! haha! Just MY opinion, of course! haha! Ladies might have a different view (literally! Haha!)

That doesn't look too see-thru to be considered vulgar here, I think it'll be fine. But, just in case someone in authority says something, it might be a good idea to bring along another suit.

Topless is illegal in the VI....that said, if you're on a somewhat deserted beach go ahead but beware of park rangers/there's a fine involved. as for thongs.. no one would stop your wife but she must remember that if there are locals at the beach she will be considered improper/culture is what it is. when in town you are asked to wear cover-ups/no bathing suits. when we travel we must respect the local customs of the island/country we are visiting.otherwise we may be considered vulgar and rude. "see thru" is not the norm on st. john...but to each his/her own..are you staying at a resort or villa...could make a difference hanging around the pool !! and please ice-man believe it or not most women don't like speedos !!! or at least american women !!!

Iceman: Topless and nudity in public is illegal. Also, you will get sour looks, maybe even overt comments if you do not dress decently. That means women may not wear their swim suit bra as a top outside the beach (including BTW driving your rented motor scooter.) Men must wear a shirt walking along the street. I have seen people thrown off of public transportation for these infractions. I do not agree with the comment, "It is illegal, but be discrete." It is illegal, it is not considered good manners and it should not be done in public.

There is my opinion! 😉

Off the soap box...

I'd echo those sentiments, East Ender! People who disregard laws because they may not be convenient make me angry. And people who disregard local customs because "hey, I'm payin' lots of money to be here, I'll do what a I darn well please" are just inconsiderate. It seems that "common courtesy" is no longer so common.

Canoebase, I might be able to agree that people who violate anti-nudity laws deserve to be ticketed or charged with a misdemeanor. But I cannot agree with your broad-brush statement condemning anybody who disregards any law. The number of criminal and civil laws has multiplied exponentially over the past decade or two, and it has become a challenge to get up in the morning and have a cup of coffee without committing a crime or a civil infraction.

Topless is against the law, but for the most cases if you are a little discreet and not in their faces people turn a blind eye, except the national park beaches on St John where it may well get you a ticket.

The locals don't spend much time at the beaches, it is mainly tourists like your self. The tourists mainly come from the US Northern part of the US East coast and Midwest. People from the west coast of America tend to go to Mexico because it is closer. So most of the people on the beach are tourists like you from towns like yours. Therefore attitudes are similar.

You can probably go topless at beaches that are quite and off the beaten path, or on the other hand ones that cater mainly to tourists staying at the resort, and not so much to locals or cruse ship crowds.

Thongs are allowed on the beaches, for both men and women, but don't expect to see that many because most of the other tourists are from towns similar to yours.

You are more likely to see topless women or thong clad people, or even nude people, out on the water where their boat gives them a bit more privacy, or at small out of the way beaches. Beaches that are easily accessible from the water but not easy from a car on the land side.

Since it's up for discussion, folks should know that there are destinations where nude sunbathing is more commonplace. It is better for all concerned if time is spent in those places, rather than here, where it is considered to be against the law. That's like going to McDonald's and trying to get the staff to make you a Whopper...

Just another word. Even guys are required to where some form of shirt at all times in public. This also means the upper deck on the ferry. Made that mistake once.
