Just curious if it is advisable for my fiance and I to get a good solid base tan before making our trip down to St. John? I am 1/2 Mexican and tan very easily and hardly ever burn and my fiance does have a small percentage of Native American and tans very well also. But the sun is alot more intense down there and we will be doing alot of outdoor activities. It just isn't going to be warm enough in Michigan to get any sort of tan before our trip.

Should we go tanning to get a decent base tan or just bring lots and lots and lots of SPF45 and a hat??

Thanks,
Diane

Diane-
That depends on what you know about your own skin and tanning. No matter what I do, I always burn badly in the Caribbean. So, I am going to try a base tan this time so that I don't ruin my trip as I have done in the past.

Have you ever spent days on end in the sun? Do you burn? If not, you are probabaly ok with a high SPF and hat.

Yes - I go camping on the shores of Lake Michigan every summer (backpacking) and spend day after day on the beach. I have slightly burned a couple of times but without wearing any sunblock or just a little bit. But I know the sun is not nearly as intense in Michigan as it is in the Caribbean.

I know it's probably not the best for my health, but I go to a tanning salon for a few weeks before every trip I make to the Caribbean. I tan pretty easily, but I like getting a base tan first so I don't have to worry so much about buring while I am there. I tan about 2 times per week for about 4 weeks before we leave.

I would think that a severe burn from the sun would do more damage that a few tanning sessions! Thanks for the advice, I will have to start looking into local tanning salons for prices as our trip is less than 2 months away! :o)
