We are heading to STT in early May, and were wondering what bars are popular. We tend to go for casual, fun places. Beach bars would be ideal. I have heard the Red Hook area is fun for hopping, but I don't know of any places besides Duffy's. Also, what time do most places close, and when would be the latest closing.
Also, any feedback on Point Pleasant and The Anchorage? We are deciding between those places.
Thanks in advance!!
Greenhouse is another bar / restaurant that has music and a few other specials.
Iggie's at Bolongo is a fun beach bar- they also have beach volleyball and other activities. Hull Bay Hideaway is kinda a beach bar. The entire Red Hook area has bars galore-Molly Molone's, Poor Man's, XO, Sopchoppy's, etc. You can stay up as long as you like- 4:00? and beyond, I hear...The other bar area is in Havensight between the Shipwreck and Off Shore. The Anchorage has Arthur's bar and restaurant on the premises and is fairly close to the Elysian which has Bonnie's and Robert's. Point Pleasant doesn't really have beach, but has a seaside bar/restaurant that is fun.
Last Thanksgiving week (2003) we stay at the Anchorage, and thought that it was a great place to stay! Quiet, remote, the condo needed some updating, but hey -- we were not in the condo that much. The property has a nice beach area (somewhat exclustive to the Anchorage property.)
We went to Red Hook (Duffy's and Molly's) for casual dining and drinking.
You are close to the Blue Moon (Secret Harbor) for a finer dining experience and if you plan on going over to St. John, the ferry is right there in Red Hood too.
Have a great time!!!
Thanks to all for the replies. I can't wait to get there!
JVC,
I can't comment on Anchorage but I have lots to tell you about Point Pleasant. We stayed there 1 month ago. This resort is NOT for the out of shape. The place is built on the side of a mountain, which is not so unusual on the island. But you must climb uneven rock steps to get anywhere. Upon our arrival we were given a nice condo however it was not the one we had contracted. This may sound minor to some, but it was an important point in our scheduling. We contracted for a condo with an L shaped balcony with windows all along two walls. What we recieved was just a regular balcony, not the wrap around. Our view was fine, however we wanted to overlook the other islands as well as the bay below, which without the L balcony, we could not see.
Point Pleasant's website boasts a shuttle service available 23 hours a day. Good Luck trying to get the freakin shuttle after 8 pm. Never.....NOT ONCE, were we able to contact the shuttle during our 12 day stay. A last resort was to call one of the restaurants on site and have them contact the shuttle, which didn't always work. One night after a late evening out, our key would not open the door. I'm told this happens often due to the moisture and lack of proper maintenance to the locks. After a 45 minute wait at the restaurant (which was closed, but I happened to catch the bartender still there) The bartender was finally able to send someone to the security hut and found the man on duty tying up the phone line because he was surfing the internet. When he finally arrived, he could not open the door either. After 10 minutes of trying he finally got in and was going to leave without lubricating the lock. I made him promise he would return with some WD-40 or something to lubricate the lock. Do you think he did? NO HE DID NOT!
As you can probably tell, there is no love lost here for Point Pleasant. I should probably tell you that the shuttle service was of a major importance in our stay because on our second night there my travel partner Ruth fell on the rock stairway to our condo and broke her ankle. The rest of our trip was not ruined however. We still got out and did stuff. The day shift shuttle guys were fantastic in aiding our adventures. We were able to reach them during the hours that the office was open. But forget it from 8pm to 9am.
The resort next door, (something Beach Resort), was better to us than our own resort. Let us use their wheelchair to access their beach and pool. And catered to us. Point Pleasant had no wheelchair, nor did they offer to help us find one. One would think they might have offered to move us to a more accessible room, since the accident happened on their property. But No...nothing, they offered to help in NO WAY.
On a lighter note, the two restaurants on the resort property were wonderful. Agave' and Fungi's on the beach. Great food and great fun for me. For my friend Ruth however, after the accident, she could not reach either place. Lots and Lots of steps to either place. No pulling up to the front door. I counted....to the easier place to reach...Agave'....35 concrete steps. To the beach restaurant... Fungi's.... I stopped counting at about 45....
Ton get to either of the three (small pools)... again....many, many stairs.
We just scheduled another trip to STT after the cast comes off. Rest assured we are not staying at Point Pleasant. We've done some research and have decided to stay at Bolongo Bay Resort. Check out their website....they are offering an anniversary special package. Also check US Airway... they are offering a Carribean special. We got round trip arifare from Philladelphia for $345.
Bolongo Bay is where Iggie's Beach Bar is... I believe another poster said Iggie's is a great beach hangout. I have heard the same things myself.
I have also heard the bars at Red Hook, which is not far from Bolongo Bay stay open until 4am. In case you'r a party animal...HAHAHA
I Hope you have a wonderful vacation.....watch your step!! HAHAHAHA
Terry and Ruth: I have to say that I am glad you explained your baddish review of Point Pleasant- people need to understand that not all hotels and restaurants are for everyone. Yes, Point Pleasant has a lot of stairs. In fact, St Thomas is rather mountainous and there are lots of stairs at many of the hotels and points of interest. While some find this fun and interesting, others find it daunting, especially someone with an injured foot! It is good to do your research. Point Pleasant has views that you won't find at Bolongo, however, you are right, everything at Bolongo is pretty much on one level, or only a few stairs. St Thomas frequently gets voted the place that has something for everyone! Have a great second visit!
Dont forget my favorite little hole in the wall,Lattitude 18.Mostly locals and right on the water across from Redhook. Its kind of in the middle of no where, which is why I like it!!
East Ender,
I had to laugh when I read your post, specifically ..."baddish review". How nicely you put that. Yes, I do have a rather bad taste in my mouth for Point Pleasant. Had it not been for my friends accident, I'm sure I would have enjoyed the place more.
I did do "some" research before I went to STT, but I could have done more. I really didn't have a true picture in my head of the actual terrain. Now that I know, I'm trying to plan things more to my taste.
I do remain steadfast in my opinion that Point Pleasant is not the best choice for someone with young children. It would be better suited for a romantic getaway. Spetacular views and private smooches while walking the trails.
Want to watch the kids play in the sand from your room... try someplace else.
You are correct East Ender....STT has something for everyone. I just hope I can prompt first timers to do more research than I did, to get a better picture of where they're going. The resort websites, understandably so, only present the best of their world. I don't think I was unigue, when I didn't think about the cons and only saw the pros, while doing my research.
I applaud you and others here, who do so much for those visiting this site. I wish I had found it before my visit.
Thank you for your wishes for my second visit. Maybe this time I'll get to do all the things I didn't get to do last time.
Chuck,
I'd like to stop in your favorite spot, Lattitude 18. I fell in love with most of the local people I met on my last ill fated trip. You see I spent alot of time without my travel partner who was laid up. I'm a talker and I loved getting to know the locals, learning about the islands and so on. By the end of my visit I was translating to people I shared cabs with. Translating what the driver was saying that is. The people who were newly arrived had trouble understanding some of the thick accents. I was kinda proud of myself for having taken the time and interest to try to understand. I had more fun with the locals than I did with the other tourists.
So... Lattitude 18 sounds like it's right up my alley. I was only in Red Hook for dinner last visit and it was after dark when I got there. Could you be a little more specific as to it's location in relation to places that I know.... specifically, Duffy's and Off the Hook.
Thanks
Terry and Ruth,
Latitude 18 is a great place! I remember the first time my husband took me there about ten years ago, it was a scary pirate place to me. It grew on me. If you standing at the end of the dock of Off The Hook looking across the water you would see the lights diectly across from you. Short of swimming or a dinghy go out of Red Hook and turn left on the road to the Ritz Carlton. Look for the I think is it second right turn that says Montesorri School. Watch out for the potholes and go to the end of the road and you are there. Pretty little beach also.
Hope you get out there.
Pamela.
Thanks for the help Pamela! We usually stay at Secret harbor and Lattitude 18 is just off of the road toSecret harbor.I remember the school sign right at the turn to Lat 18.Any body help out with the street names? We were there for "Barktober" fest last year, which raised money for the local animal shelter I believe. They had local bands and a good size crowd. We had a great time! I just dont recall the names of the local roads! Chuck
