:@) My husband27 and i 25 went to St. Thomas and St. John for vacation Sept. 2008. We stayed in Red Hook and rented a one BDRM apt. from a lady, and that ended up being the best decision we made about the trip. If you go downtown, you don't want to be down there at night. All the locals tell you do not walk down the streets at night past like 5 or 6. Plus after like between 5-7 pm the safari buses which are normally 1$ to take you wherever you want to go, turn into taxis that cost upwards of between 7-15 dollars depending on where you want to go. If you stay in red hook you can walk, it's very safe, but be careful when walking along the roads. People drive very fast on the opposite lanes, plus there are lots of blind spots/curves. The best places to go downtown Red Hook were the Caribbean Saloon and Duffy's Love Shack. http://www.pubclub.com/caribbean/stthomasbars.htm Caribbean Saloon has lots of tvs and booth style seating as well as bar seating as well; it's mainly a sports bar, but is has awesome Conch Fritters! SERIOUSLY DELICIOUS! Duffy's Love Shack starts late in the night. So it's a good second place to go, once every starts to come out late at night. Once the music starts playing, the drinks start pouring, people start dancing the party doesn't stop till late in the morning. Once night i didn't get home till 4:30 am. We stayed for 9 days. All we did was go to as many of the beaches we could, took safari buses everywhere for a dollar, went to eat as many places as we could and stayed in Red Hook at night. The Saint was supposed to be a real happening club. It is awesome the way it looks, it seems like everyone would all go there. It is all enclosed, dimly lit, local music and club music and air conditioned. But i heard from the locals that the locals don't like it because the owners tried to make a dress code, no one liked it so no one ever really came back. Beside the Saint is a great cheese and wine shop. You will find some amazing cheeses in there. Across from that is a small grocery store. Kinda pricey, but you can find all kinds of grocery items and fruit in there to get your nosh on. Across the street is the ferry. We took a ferry ride across the ocean to St. John for 12 dollars. for 150 dollars a peice you can take an all day trip to Jos Van Dyke. Downtown you can take a ferry ride for 6$ to water island. That place you better be expected to walk all over, anywhere you want to go. there is a nice beach to walk to, with a food and drink vendor and bathrooms. The best thing to eat is the road side vendors who cook chicken and sell local fruits! One day we were so burnt and tired from walking, we decided to just ride around for an hour or so on the safari bus and just listen and watch people. It was fun. The best thing i've ever done in my life. This was an unforgettable experience. The most memorable thing was being greeted at the air port in st thomas with shots of rum! 🙂 Coki Beach was the locals, it is basically the slums of st. thomas. Trunk bay has an underwater snorkel area and is awesome! get to the beaches early and you will have them all to yourself. Down town charlotte amalie is basically all jewelry. But there is a nice liquor store down town where you can luck out and find some great deals on cruzan rums and some other liqours of your choice.

Jennajoy: While I am glad that you all had a good time in 2008 (not sure the reason for your posts now), I do want to make a couple of comments.

Town is not actually the den of iniquity you describe. There are many good businesses there- and while there are many jewelry stores- there are restaurants and bars, clothing stores, gift items, art work, coffee shops... Yes, one should be careful at night.

Red Hook is an entertainment destination. There is something for everyone. However, Yacht Haven Grande (Fat Turtle, Wikked and Grand Cru along with shopping) has its fans. Frenchtown is also a great place. You sound like the publicist for the town of Red Hook- LOL!!

As to liquor- You can buy it cheaper in some of the local stores including Cost-U-Less, K-Mart and grocery stores.

I have a feeling your review was strongly influenced by your use of the safari system. It really isn't set up as a bus service for visitors, which is why most people here recommend that you either rent a car or use a taxi when you are going out on the town.

Again, glad you enjoyed the east end and hope you come back soon. 🙂

I agree and would also add that your comment that, " Coki Beach was the locals, it is basically the slums of st. thomas..." is an odd observation. It's a very popular beach and is one of the main spots on cruise ship tours as it also houses the Coral World aquarium with its underwater observatory, local vendors, very good snorkeling and plenty of local atmosphere. Hardly the slums. But I echo EE in being glad that you enjoyed your visit and hoping that you return again to see some more of our island.
