I have read that you can take a car between islands by use of a car barge or ferry. My first question is if this is OK with the rental companies having their autos leaving the island they are registered on? I would think that it would raise the insurance rates quite a bit. My second question is that I was wondering if this is possible between St. Thomas and St. Croix or is it only between St. Thomas and St. John?

Just took the car ferry twice & people ferry once the week before Xmas. Prices range from $43-$53 for the car ferry round trip. The $53 ferry was a big barge for commercial & regular autos - trip was much smoother but it is only a half hour ( I think...you lose track of time in the islands) If staying on STJ you buy a one-way ticket. The smaller ferry has two - Roanoke & ??? They cost only $40 and run more frequent. Check the times on the What's happening in STT & STJ for that week ( pickup at airport or car place) Of course, they do what they want so ask when you get there. We never checked, just drove there & never waited more than 15 minutes either way. The Roanoke has palm trees & a bar on it 🙂 Hertz does NOT let you take their cars over...we used Thrifty, just outside the airport. They were great, called from pay phone when bags were in & they were there in 5 minutes. Rented an economy car for $195 for a week. They dropped the price to $180 & then offered us a jeep for the same price. Since we really wanted a jeep for STJ roads we were thrilled. Daniel was the man there. Budget has horrible reviews on STT so we switched to Thrifty. The people ferry is a much faster ride & $10 round trip. They run to 11 -12 at night. The last car ferry left at 7 from STJ to STT.
The car ferry is only available from STT-STJ-STT there is no ferry to STX, however NO car rental agency on STJ allows their vehicles to be taken off the island so it is only available from STT to STJ and you do need to check if your rental company allows it or not (not all do)
