Hi there folks,

Got some friends coming in March and they asked about renting a sailboat for a day. Not looking for anything fancy, around 25' will do just to putter around St. Thomas, St. John. Both of us are accustomed to sailboats, he has open water Gulf experience.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Hello Tejas Tom,

I had looked into this a while back and couldn't find any bareboat sailboats besides term charter yachts. Motored boat rentals are available on St. Thomas & St. John.

Pamela do you know of any bareboat sailboats for a day?

Don't know of any bareboat sail rentals. There are power boat rentals for the day.

Tom,
I've tried to do the same thing, but had no luck talking any of the bareboat places out of a boat for just a day or two (and I have an "any boat in the fleet" Skipper's Card with The Moorings, so it's not an issue of qualification). In talking with a couple of the managers, it seems like it's too expensive to rent a boat that's equipped for cruising as just a daysailor, and - to my surprise, frankly - there doesn't seem to be a big enough market to support a fleet of daysailors only.

I continue to snoop around, if I ever find something I'll be sure and post the details.

Fanfare Charters used to have short term sail boats. Don't know if they still are in business??

Tom: I wondered if you were still around!!!

Yes, I'm still around. You just don't see me in the "usual places."

Well I'm determined. Anyone know of a private person that may be willing to loan his/her boat out for compensation?

No, Fan Fare went under some time ago. Tom, I can recommend a couple of Captain Only daysails where you and your friends can drive the boat, etc. but the Captain would be on it .... you know how funny these people are about thier boats 🙂 You might trying calling VIP at Compass Point. They have been known to rent some of the smaller ones to a local for a couple of days. Let me know if you want the Captain Only referral numbers.
