Hello everyone,

We are coming to St John in 2 weeks and are looking into renting a boat. I am an avid boater, owning a boat and 2 jetskis. What kinds of obstacles do I face in renting a bareboat, or should I say are there any dangers. Of course there are going to be dangers(commen sense will take care of most of it) but is there anything out of the norm?

Also. If I decide on venturing over to the BVI's how does the customs work? Do you stop at a boat in the water and pay your way, do you pay the boat rental company and show proof "if" you get stopped?

Thank You,

Graham

Check the rental places in the yellow pages at www.viphonebook.com.

Most will give you a chart and point out the dangers to you. But, be careful! If you ding the prop on a reef, you willbe required to pay for it...and you killed the reef (which takes decades to grow back).

If you go to the BVI, you are required to check in at Customs and Immigration. I usually clear at the West End on Tortola. That'll take care of you for the whole day. Or you could clear on Jost. Or on Virgin Gorda. Just depends on where you want to go. The rental company will give you the forms and advise you.
