Hi fellow travekkers

I am planning a back packing trip thru the Caribbean Island as far south as Margarita Venezula, starting in St Thomas in 2006-2007, the exact date I haven't determined yet.
Is it safe to travel alone with this idea I have, or should I be trying to get another person to do it with me?

Is it easier to get lodgings at bed and breakies??

Liat Air supposedly has a fare of 300 US to travel anywhere they fly in the Caribbean but it has to be complete in 21 days ?? any one know anything about this?

Any suggestions or ideas anyone has would be greatly appreciated
Thanks in Advance

Gene: Have you read through LIAT's website at www.fly-liat.com? I believe they explain the various special fares available. There is a Super Explorer (30 days), an Explorer (21 days) in association with international travel and an Airpass (21 days) for European travelers. Unless something has changed recently, LIAT doesn't go to Margarita. Trinidad and Tobago is the end of the line.

I can't comment on the back-packing part, although I have a feeling there are countries in the Caribbean that would not be very happy with visitors without hotel reservations. I know that when we have traveled on one-way tickets to meet friends to sail back, we have been asked where we were staying and when we were leaving. Also, there are places that do not allow camping, if that is what you were planning.

Hello Gene,

I think you could travel through much of the Caribbean on your own safely by doing research on each of your destinations and planning well. Having a friend along might make things more fun.

You can find small inns, b&bs, small hotels, campgrounds on various islands and can aim for a budget trip.

I am familiar with Liat's package. Check out their web site for details. East Ender posted it above. Or call their main office in Trinidad at 18888445428 and ask for details.

Sounds like a great time. Do some good planning! All the best.

Islander
Thanks for the info, I will have this trip planned out so that I have a place to stay for the time I am on the islands. Liat has a great mini explorer fare that wil allow me to go to 4 stops so I can make a good trip out of 16 days.

I am planning San Juan to St Croix...3 days in St Croix

St Croix to Dominica
3 days there, ferry to Guadeloupe 3 days there
ferry to Martinique 3 days there
back to Dominica for 1 day
fly to Barbados 3 days there
then fly back to San Juan

should be fun not matter what the weather, I think the Caribbean is the best place!
