What is the general attire for restaurants in Cruz Bay area or most of St. John for that matter? I keep reading posts that say just bring your shorts and t-shirts and you're set, but it that really appropriate for most places or just the more simple like the BBQ place I've heard so much about? Just trying to pack, haha, we arrive on July 12th!!!!!

the attire of dress for most if not all of the virgins is casual... sandals and shorts are ok everywhere, however tank tops on men in finer restaurants might be frowned upon. a collared golf shirt would be as dressey as it gets for men, and as far as women, they can get away w/ just about anything.

Hello Kathleen,

For dinner at restaurants in Cruz Bay: for men a collared shirt and dress shorts would work. For women a sundress, dress shorts or skirt and blouse, a nice tank top and jeans or capris. The t-shirt and shorts would work at some of the more casual places... although I've seen folks in t-shirts and shorts at some of the nicer restaurants too.

PS. The exception to this that comes to mind is one of the restaurants at Caneel Bay (which of course isn't in Cruz Bay but I thought I'd mention it). 😉 Slacks & closed shoes rather than shorts and sandals would be the suggested/required dress.

Have fun packing!

While lip is correct that most restaurants will sit you with shorts and reasonable attire, I am with Islander concerning 'expectations'. BBQ and side bar/reataurants will accept shorts, flip flops and t-shirts but you should 'dress up' for the majority of sit down places in Cruz. Of course 'dress up' is more casual in VI and means dress shorts/slacks with collared shirts for men, the same or sundress for women. I find it more respectful to the restaurant and fellow diners when 'dressed up' and really notice when someone comes in like they just walked off the beach.

In winter season the Turtle Bay Estate restaurant in Caneel want men to wear dress shirt, slacks and a sport coat.

I am arriving in St. John on July 8 and even though I have been there several times I was also wondering about dress code for men; I think it will be dress shorts for the evenings and maybe one pair of pants just in case. We must remember that it will definitely be hot; latest I heard is that the water temp. is 84 degrees.

My husband never wore long pants when we were in St. Thomas or St. John. Even on our anniversary dinner, he wore nice shorts and a hawain shirt and a pair of boat shoes. I wore a light skirt and short sleave top.

I was supprised at how laid back St. Thomas/St. John were.

Believe me, you will not wear long pants...and who would want to???

I have to say that there are lots of folks who wear long pants. Some because their legs aren't so attractive anymore (!) and some because it slows down the bity bugs!
