Do they work in the VI?

We are planning a trip to St. John in July. This forum has been very helpful. Thank you!

Yes it does. Of course you have your usual 'bad cell' area.

Is ATT cellular service "in-network" or "roaming" ?

Hello,

The service providers on island that have networks here are Sprint, Cingular, Innovative (local company) and Centennial. ATT seems to work off of Cingulars network (or so I have heard). I have never received a concrete answer as to whether ATT does/doesn't charge roaming or long distance when their phones are used in the VI.

Patrick is that what you use? Did you pay roaming or long distance charges?

First. Cingular is in the process of acquiring AT&T wireless, not to be confused with the old AT&T which is going back into the wireless business latter this year reselling Sprint's service.

As to roaming charges, if you have AT&T's national plan (GSM) then the VI is the same as any other location in the USA. No roaming, no charge for LD and you can use your free evening and weekend minutes to call anywhere.

Not sure if I'm on GSM (isn't that the new network - I'm on older phones), but I have my phones through Cincinnati Bell Wireless using AT&T, Nationwide coverage and no charge for LD, but there are roaming charges. Having said that, we used our phones during our recent stay on STJ and were covered "in network" (checked beforehand, and just got my bill and verified). However, watch for whether it shows AT&T or roaming (or extended area). Can't say for sure, but we stayed on a hillside in Chocolate Hole looking towards St. Thomas, and I'd assume we were picking up a tower on St. Thomas. Go to the north side and the phone said extended area, presumably picking up the BVI through Tortola.

As an aside, we took a day trip to the Baths, and there was a family from Scotland. Once he was on BVI (presumably in network for him), he made a series of calls, I figured so they weren't international long distance rates.
