Mamabear had her left knee replaced yesterday. The kids are already calling her the Bionic Mom. How much trouble can we anticipate going through security next year when we go to STX?

I have 2 artifical knees so I consider myself an expert. When she walks though the scanner and it goes off, she should tell the officer she has an artifical knee. They will take her aside and "wand her down" and pat her down. No documents from the doctor, showing her scar, etc. will prevent her being examined. The ladies are always nice to me and it only takes an extra 3-5 minutes. Be prepared to get her stuff off the conveyer belt. When traveling alone, an officer will get my things and bring them to me while they examine me.

One time when flying back from Louisville I went thru security and the scanner DID NOT go off. I didn't quite know what to do. I kept my mouth shut, but I worried the whole trip about the scanner that did not recognize my artifical knees!

My aunt also has two artificial knees and goes through much the same thing as Linda J. She does carry a document from her doctor just in case she would ever need confirmation of her bionic "parts" but so far no one has asked for it. One note - we were behind her in line one time and tried to take her stuff off the conveyor while they were wanding and patting her down. The TSA told Hubs not to touch her bags until they were done with her and that HE would remove them. We had done this before for her but this guy wasn't having it. No biggie but the next time we will ask before attempting to pick up her stuff.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm at the hospital now. She's being transferred to a rehab facility tomorrow. She'll be there for 10-14 days more. We'll be down to STX for the Triathlon Jump Up. It will be nice when she's more mobile.

Knees are fine, it's nipple rings that cause TSA concern, but fortunately Gloria Allred is willing to help: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23830845/ 😀
