Arriving on Sat., Aug 30th planning on taking to ferrry to St John's on Sunday do some hiking etc....Then on Monday, LABOR DAY taking a tour to Tortola, Virgin Gorda etc. I thought it might be a good idea to leave St Thomas on Labor Day...bet it will be PACKED. Anyone have any thoughts on best places to eat in St Thomas or St Johns or Tortola....would be happy to hear about your favorite places.
Can't wait to go....We are leaving our child at home.....First vaction along in 14years
Ruth: September is a slow month in the Caribbean. Labor Day will be pretty quiet, except maybe at the mall because public school starts on Tuesday. But your plan sounds okay. You might be surprised that the BVI is more crowded on Labor Day because the it is a 3 day weekend for the USVI and Puerto Rico, and it is a favorite boating getaway! 😉 Lots of great hiking on St John (no 's) Lots of great restaurants all over! Have a great vacation!
Hello Ruth,
Have to agree with East Ender... no reason to avoid St. Thomas on labor day - not a huge holiday for us. Sunday on St. John sounds good.. Maho Bay might be busier then usual -- boaters often come there on three day weekends... often lots of nice boats from Puerto Rico tied together with folks playing dominos :-).
When you say you are taking a tour... I figure you mean with a charter. Ferries don't run to Virgin Gorda on Mondays if you were planning to do this on your own. But chartering there would be fine. Bring the documents you need for immigration (passport is best).
Best places to eat... ahhhh. Try Agave Terrace, Epernay, Blue Moon Cafe, Banana Tree Grill, Sibs, Molly Malones, Caribbean Steak House, Greenhouse for Happy Hour, Paradise Point for Happy Hour..... like East Ender said there are sooo many.

Dont forget local favorites: McDonalds, KFC, and Subway.
Chris - I know you are being funny... but thought I would share a story. I met a young guy from the states earlier last year who had lived here for maybe 4 months and said he just couldn't stay because there were NOT enough fast food places!!! Had to get back to the states for his favorites. (That was not his only reason, but one of his top 3 reasons!)

I still wont eat at the dreadful Subway on STJ and I was going to eventually stop by the redhook Subway. I wont now since its the same owner as the STJ store. Too bad I see all the STT commuters loving that Subway TO DEATH!!! Subway isnt as bad as McDonalds but I still hate to see corporations come to STJ. Its too bad.
I have to add that when Tortola people come to STT for various reasons- shopping, medical care, etc. they head straight for McDonald's! St. Thomas is proud of its reputation as an all-around destination. Chris: If you are so upset with corporations on St John, why do you work for such a big one? 😉
What huge corporation are you talking about?
I work at Chloe and Bernards at the Westin. The westin doesn't run our restaurant and I am not an employee of the Westin. The company that runs chloes is a small corporation which supports and trains chefs as opposed to cooking drones like Applebees and TGIF. Even those restaurants pale in comparison how horrible the HUGE corporations like Subway, McD's, KFC, Wendy's, or any of the other fastfoodThe only people making any money in those places are the restaurant managers and owners. Do you think the people working for those corporations make very good pay?
Think the american dream is alive for someone working at Subway?
"Maybe if I do REAL good, they'll give me a raise in three months and I will be making a quarter more than minimum. "
Dont you think the food at those places is pretty nasty? Think about the people that are paid minimum wage to handle your food......do you think they care?
St. Thomas can keep all their fast food.
