The reason why I ask this is because I have a vacation planned to St John in October and I just found out that I have to have abdominal surgery (like c-section) in September. My doctor thinks I will be fine to travel in a month since this is a relaxing vacation but I am concerned because we will be doind a lot of driving in St John to explore the island and if the roads are mostly unpaved or very bumpy, I should not venture. Any advance info would be greatly appreciated so that we can plan ahead.

The roads aren't unpaved or bumpy on either island - but tend to be pretty curvey & steep. I see no real problem there...tell hubby to drive slowly - which shouldn't be hard since you really can't go fast due to the winding roads. It's a good thing that you didn't plan your trip for Turks & Caicos - those roads are brutal on the body. HA!
Good luck and congratulations, by the way! Are you taking the baby along?

The main roads are paved and mostly bump free. Where are you staying? Some driveways to villas can be very bumpy.

Thanks for the info. Actually I am having surgery so that I can get pregnant. Hopefully 3 months after surgery, I can start trying to get pregnant. Fertility issues. Anyways we are staying at Sunset Ridge Villas. I was told they are located on top of the mountain near Cruz Bay. Do you know how the road is to get up there? I am sure I will be fine but just want to use caution since I will only be a month post op.

I had a lumpectomy and a tubal ligation within the same month and would take the recuperative effects of the islands anyday (and a Cruzan and coke although the Banana Cruzan and OJ is good too.)
Enjoy your vacation and hopefully... in a year, you'll have a little bundle of joy!

Even the main roads have pot holes. The key is take it slow but the roads are not very good if you want an honest answer. The newest roads are out on East End before Salt Pond Bay and around sunset villas by Jacob's Ladder. Even Centerline has hug potholes.

I have stayed at sunset ridge villas and there are 2 different ways up to them. One is very curvy and steep and paved all the way. the other, the preferred way is not as steep and is paved most of the way other then a small section just before you get there. This section is very bumpy but is a short section. You could walk and meet the car at the pave section if concerned and could even help the driver with directing him around the holes and rocks. That section would be the worst road you would find on St John unless going off road.
These villa's have a awesome view, enjoy your stay.

Thanks so much Bobbi. I appreciate knowing all this info beforehand so that we can make the best out of vacation. I have read from several people that the villas have stunning views and I am so excited to go. I have only been to St John twice while on cruises and we fell in love with the island as most people do. This is our first time going there and staying for a week.
