The last time we were in Coral Bay there were many boats there moored to permanent buoys. Are these mooring free? I saw at Norman Island it was written on each mooring to pay at Billy Bones (now Pirate Bight).
Those are private moorings, not rentals. There are no rentals in Coral Bay.
Surely you can you put in your own mooring buoy or simply anchor free?
Putting in your own mooring requires permission from Planning and Natural Resources. Cost is approx. $5 per foot of the vessel per year. This does not include cost of ground tackle. You are welcome to anchor for seven days in any USVI waters other than National Park then move your anchor. The moorings in the National Park waters are $15 per night with a maximum of 30 nights per year. Moorings are for vessels less than 65" LOA. If more than 65' you may anchor in NPS waters with a $15 a night charge with same yearly restrictions.

And don't call me Shirley! 😉
rh: Are you talking about anchoring for a night? In the Coral Bay area, in addition to Pamela's great advice, you should research carefully before putting an anchor down. There is a section of Hurricane Hole that is a no anchor area, and because of all the private moorings it is difficult to find a place to anchor near Coral Bay. And the bottom is muddy, not a great swimming bay at all.
How about Cruz Bay. I assume the same rules apply. I'm looking at the logistics of moving a boat there year round.
Thanks Pamela for the great advice.

Same rules. I doubt seriously if you could find a location in Cruz Bay that would be granted a mooring permit. Try Great Cruz near the Westin - you might have a little better luck.

I spoke to the folks at DPNR about mooring permits this morning. They said that Coral Harbor is now closed, and no new mooring permits will be granted to anyone. They also said that only area by ST John where you can still obtain a mooring permit is in Chocolate Hole.
