We are looking at villas in that area, and while have been to STJ several times before, can't quite remember this area, never stayed on the Coral bay side. One of interest is Joanne's Garden by the sea/Giovanna's Giardino Al Mare. Open to any suggestions that welcome kids age 5 and 8 with some sort of ac. Want to stay $1500 or under, going in late June/early July timeframe. Appreciate any suggestions. It's been 3 years too long since we have been to STJ...

We stayed at Sago Cottage, part of the Calabash Cottages. Great views and nice location. The road is, or was challenging. You will need 4 wheel drive. The road starts by the, is it a school? just past Shipwreck landing.

The have started the affordable housing development in Calabash Boom so I would ask how close the villas are and if you can hear the construction noise or not.

The road has gotten a lot better, but 4WD is necessary. Mooncottage is in that area too... FANTASTIC views and very private and quiet. As far as I know construction noise has not been an issue in that area with the new development.

Just stayed at calabash guest cottage. There was no AC and yes the road was a challenge. However, it was a totally awesome experience. You can hear the jazz band at shipwreck landing from your cottage.

We stayed at Sunrise about 2 years ago:
http://greatcaribbeangetaways.com/sunrise.htm

It has amazing views, a hot tub (no pool...may be important to kids), no a/c (not necessary because of cool temps and breezes so high up the hillside), 2 bedrooms on the main floor, 1 on lower level that is entered from the outside...so it is probably not what you are looking for.

I loved staying in the Calabash Boom area...it's on the hillside just before you get to Miss Lucy's. The road was pretty scary to get up to our villa. I'm not sure I would want to stay that high up with kids. But I loved the Coral Bay area and will definitely stay on that side of the island when our little guy is a bit older.

Windspree rents a number of homes in the Coral Bay area, several in your price range. I've heard great things about a few of their villas, so they may be worth looking at.

Good luck!

Tampaguy,

Sago is for everyone and I sometimes hesitate to recommend too highly --- but we loved it!! I'd almost forgotten listening to the music from Shipwreck.

One of the bad things about living on STX is not vacationing on STJ

I haven't stayed there, but have read several earlier reviews of Sago. If you run a Search (see Forum Tools at the top of the page) for "Sago" and "All Dates" in the Registered Users Options, you'll see 85 previous posts about Sago (most about the villa you are thinking of). Here are a few I found in a quick review of the results:

We stayed at Sago a few years ago and loved it. Very private with wonderful views, even from the hot tub. A couple of things to know so you won't be surprised - no A/C. But there was plenty of breeze for us. There is no bathtub and the shower is outside. I know that sounds odd, but it is sooo cool. The whole cottage feels very cozy and romantic, the porches are great. And the owners live on-island and ar available easily by phone.

For two people who want a romantic get away it can't be beat.
