Does anyone care to share a good witty/suspense title for days at the BEACH sipping painkillers??

Do you like sex and adventure and time travel? Try out the Diana Gabaldon series, starting with Outlander, then on to the other 5 books. Great read. More of a chick read but....

Sorry I do not have a reading recommendation for you. I just had to answer your post for the simple reason that my name is Ingrid too! I just joined the forum and this is my first post!

Very similar to the Evanovich series of "number" books is A is for Alibi, B is for Burgler etc. series by Sue Grafton. Both have female protagonists who are a stitch. Another very fun, "light" reading idea is the slew of books by Robert B. Parker about Spencer. Anyone old enough to have been watching evening t.v. in the 70's will remember Spencer and Hawk! Another great read for dog lovers is Marley and Me! Enjoy!

Recommend 'Breath' by the owner/captain of the boat of the same name (forget if she is a sloop or a cutter). She was built on the east end of STJ and is still, as I understand, available for daysails. Each chapter is a different adventure so no worries about being tied to the book when you should be baking your brain in the sun or snorkeling.

I have to second Jo-Ann's nod for the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. I was finishing the 3rd installment when on STJ a few weeks ago, which was very appropriate b/c it's called "Voyager" and actually was set in the Caribbean, only, back in the 1700s. It's an incredible series. When I listened to the first one on audio, I didn't realize it was a series. As the book was getting near the end (the 5th of five 8-hour audios), I was panicking thinking: It's almost over! After it ended, I was crushed. So sad that the story was thru, I missed the characters.

Going into the book store to buy the actual book so I could share with family, I found the sequels and was absolutely thrilled that the story was continuing! Don't let the size of the books intimidate you--if this is your style, you will be hooked and will fly through the pages.

Some other suggestions (not historical): Everything Borrowed and sequel, Everything Blue (both light and make you want to keep reading), The Glass Castle (a memoir that will amaze), Memoirs of a Geisha (fave book of all time), or My Sister's Keeper. Only My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Piccoult is a figure-it-out book (whose ending will floor you) but they're all good books overall.

Just my two cents- My Sister's Keeper was one of the saddest, most depressing books I've ever read- not one I'd recommend for vacation reading, BUT- I couldn't put it down.

Anything by James Patterson keeps my attention at the beach.

The alphabet series by Sue Grafton. (starts with "A" is for Alibi)

Easy reads, and I loved getting to know Kinsey Millhone. The latest in the series, "T" is for Trespass is coming out in December.

Any of the series by Diane Mott Davidson is great.

Pia,

If I were a cynic, I'd think you were just trying to boost the VI's economy by suggesting we read a book abotu shopping as we sit in such close proximity to Charlotte Amalie, the shopping capital of the Caribbean. 😉

IMHO... I found the one book I tried to read from the Shopaholic series to be silly, shallow, and sophomoric. The main character, Becky is a moron, seeming to lack basic scruples and is a first class liar to boot.
I would recommend saving your time and money if you expect more than fluff in a book.

That's why it's a good beach read. You can drink painkillers, swim between pages, half pay attention to the book and half pay attention to your husband checking out the bikinis....and you still know what Becky is up to.

Yeah, if you drink painkillers and read this book, I bet Becky's antics will seem admirable. I've not read this series...but I guess that it might come down to th fact that negotiating 5th Avenue in a pair of Manolo Blahniks is worth reading about.;)

I mentioned this on another thread but thought I'd mention it on this one too, and that's anything about the "Sweet Potatoe Queen's" (If you like literally laughing out loud when reading!) they are halarious. and the Sweet Potatoe Queen's Big Ass Cookbook does have some really good recipes. The "SPQ Field Guide to Men: All The Men I Know are Either Married, Gay, of Dead" is a GREAT one! It's mostly geared for women aged 35-50 or so. soooo funny!

Find Becky's antics admirable?
This would take more than several painkillers for me.

Re: ".....negotiating 5th Ave in a pair of Manolo Blahniks" or Jimmy Choos or Ferragamos...not enough to entice me to want to read about this stupid and self centered girl.

I would be more than happy to send you my partially read copy ; I'd even pay for postage.....:)
