Has anyone ever gone to the St John and then decided to rent a car for a day or two and negotiated a lower rental price? I would think they would if they still had a lot full of cars.
Nope, never tried that. Don't expect I ever will. Car rentals are one of the few locally owned businesses that I am able to deal with on my StJ trips. I prefer to look for and ask for discounts from the airlines and villa. I would be extra vigilant with the pre-rental checkout and make sure you have the gas tank extra full on return. Pray that you don't have an accident or anything go wrong with the vehicle. Good luck with that.
I am not sure what praying that I don't have an accident or anything go wrong with the vehicle would have to do with it. You would go through the same rules of renting whether you pay the normal price or not. That would mean checking over the vehicle before and after you rent it and also refilling the tank. I can;t imagine the car rental places would try to stick me with anything just because I negotiated a lower price. They always have the opportunity to turn down an offer, but like I said before if it is off season and they have a lot full of cars then I can imagine any money would be better than none to them. Granted I am not talking about an unreasonable offer just cheaper than the rest of the rentals on island.
FWIW, I have always negotiated a price with what ever company I have used, have always had good luck in getting a shorter price per day, or in most case because I am renting it for several weeks to month they have always given me a very good price.
I see nothing wrong with it, anyone of the rental places can just say no if they do not want to do business with me. Even when I rented from on St.T. I negotiated the price.
how about renting a car when you get to STT airport? has anyone found anything cheaper than $50/day?
Actually, you can rent a non-negotiated price for $65/day on St John. Then you don't have the hassle of the using the car ferry or if something happened on St John to your car. I have heard that can be a bit of a problem if it needs service.
