I will be travelling from Kansas City to St. Croix around 2/10 for about 10 days. Any help on airfare would be appreciated.
Check www.kayak.com to look for good fares. We're paying a little over $500 in April from Bradley Airport in CT.
I JUST BOOKED ON SPIRIT AIRLINES. MY SISTER AND I ARE FLYING OUT OF FORT LAUDERDALE FOR 231.00 ROUND TRIP FOR BOTH OF US. THEY OFFER UNBELIEVABLE FARES ON TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS. YOU MUST BE VERY FLEXIBLE WITH YOUR TRAVEL DATES.
Spirit is very very cheap, but for my money, coming into STT, American Airlines has the most and best flights. I live here, but Nashville is my hometown and a HUGE Amewrican Airlines hub, so this plays a major role when I travel back there.
Spirit is very restrictive with travel dates.
I agree with Kayak. It gives you the lowest fares for all airlines. I've used them a few times.
Good luck!
I flew on Delta out of Nashville. Never found an American flight with good times AND a reasonable price. (Like I'd have had to stay on STT the night before because I would've had a 6:40 a.m. departure. So that wouldn't save me money.)
I bought my flight and then signed up with Yapta. It tracks your flight and tells you if it goes down in price enough for you to make a change and save money. It was really cool, even though my flight never went down before I left.
I am arriving on STT this coming Monday from Los Angeles and I found airfare on American for under $300! The prior trip in June I flew on Spirit for about $350.
There's currently an airfare war going on. It was announced yesterday. It is specific to certain departure cities - including Philadelphia.
I just found a fare for USAir - PHL to STT in December for $300 r/t.
Check travelzoo.com for more details.
American is the best way to get here but Seaborn is by far my favorite for inter island travel. nothing gets lost , and everone is so friendly..
Keep an eye on American's website. I found NO difference in rates between any of the 'big' discount websites and AA directly though God knows I tried them all. We leave next week on the 8th of Nov. and for both of us total with taxes and all fees was a little more than $700. The trick was to keep going back to check. Try being a little flexible on your dates if you can. The flights are excellent, too, time wise, connecting in PR one way and MIA the other.
Again, if a person will book DIRECTLY with American through the American Airlines website, the fares are very good.
I understand if someone is staying on St. John that early morning flights can be a problem, however, American has a new search engine that uses both fare AND schedule and this might help.
I have to go home the end of the month for a few days on business and my round trip from ST. Thomas to Nashville with 1 layover each way in Miami(THANK GOD IT ISN'T SAN JUAN!!!!!) is less than $350.00 inclusive of taxes. And this puts me home at 1:00PM and back onn island on the return flight at 4:05PM.
Just checked travelzoo for next may and it's 269.00 RT...that's a really good price considering we paid 428.00 last May.
That's from PHL to STT.
What I recommend is looking on hotwire, priceline, kayak, etc and finding the best deal and then booking it directly from the airline because they'll give you a few dollars off the price to book online with them.
I have seen cheap flights on American from Nashville, but I prefer flying through Atlanta (Delta) or Charlotte (USAir) than Miami. If you can find one that gets you off STT at a decent hour and doesn't have a long (like 9+ hours) layover in Miami, then that's pretty good.
As long as my plane ticket's under $500, I'm happy because that's what I always budget just in case. I've seen them as high as $600+ and as low as $349 from here, so I shoot for somewhere in between.
About a month ago I was checking my FF miles on the American Airlines website to see if my bonus miles had posted from my August trip. I thought it was still too early to look for next August, but I checked just the same. I found round trip direct flights, Saturday to Saturday from JFK for $260. With taxes and fees it came to $307. The return trip must have just opened for booking. Naturally, I grabbed the flights. I was the first seat booked on each one. Perhaps a first passenger special? The next day the fares were higher. That's the earliest I've ever booked my flights. I also reserved my car while I was at it since those rates never seem to go down.

I looked today for next year, and the cheapest I found was $475. I can do much better than that eventually.
I was amazined at how cheap I found our flight from Phila. A villa that we rented last May, which has been done over has been offered to us again at 50 percent off the rate. That's another great deal. Just have to get everybody moving on this before the fares go up.
You'll probably find the cheapest fare on AA out of STL. Worth the 4 hour drive from KC. It's usually around $400-$500/pp.
Bobb:
I also fly out of MCI. Your best bet is Delta. They have several flights each morning out of MCI to ATL. It's best to allow a couple of hours in ATL, although we've made a 38 minute connection (to STT/not STX). I'd grab any rt fare under $400, and have paid as much as $800--when we waited too long. The planes flying to STX are usually smaller than those going to STT. Bring a book. . .the one we were on last year to STX didn't have movies like the bigger planes going to STT. I usually buy our tickets on Travelocity, and have also used CheapAir-(and they ended up costing more than Travelocity).
Have a great trip!
