I'm looking to travel from St. Croix to Providence at the end of January. It seems like the cheapest flight I could find goes from STX to SJU, SJU to Philly and Philly to Providence. However, the SJU-Philly and Philly-Providence flights are the last flights of the day (I would leave STX at 4 and reach Providence at 11). Considering how flights are often canceled in snowy weather, should I pay an extra $30 to take an earlier flight where I leave STX at 1 and reach Providence at 9? (The 1 pm STX-SJU flight is a Caribbean Sun flight, and the 4 pm STX-SJU flight is an American Eagle flight)
I just don't want to be stranded in either SJU or PHL before returning to school. Any bad experiences for winter travel from the VI to the states? Am I just being paranoid, or do my worries have any real merit? I heard so many bad reviews about Caribbean Sun, would it just be better to take the 4pm American Eagle flight, and risk it?
Here are my options:
1. Take the 4 pm flight because there is no real worry about flights being canceled in the winter.
2. Take the 1 pm flight because I don't want to spend the night in an airport if the weather is bad.
3. Take the 4 pm flight because American Eagle is better than Caribbean Sun (or is it?)
Oh I forgot, another worry is whether my baggage would make my flights. Any bad experiences on missing baggage for a 50 minute connection (if I left at 4, I would make a 58 minute and a 52 minute connection in SJU and PHL, respectively).
Feeling lucky? Looks like you are rolling the dice on you connection times. Summer would be no big deal. But winter?...... all you'd need is for one of those planes to be delayed due to weather or even a long line for de-icing of the wings.
So the more time you give yourself, the better chances you'll have. As for luggage, best bet would be to stick to one airline thus minimizing the chances of late or lost bags.
It's hard to say what the weather will be like on the day you travel. I remember we had quite a bit of snow on the first weekend of December last year. The Farmer's Almanac is calling for another wet winter this time around. Just like last year's.
Good luck!
