I am bringing some of my own fishing gear and I was wondering if a small rod tube would be considered a carry-on. My wife and I will both have back packs as carry-ons but, I also would like to bring on my rod tube. We are flying on American. Any shared experiences or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thankx

As long as it is a break-down rod, so the tube is under 5 feet, you should be able to carry it on and store it in the closet that they hang garment bags in.

Hello Ryan,

On American USVI flights you are allowed 2 pieces of checked bags, 1 carry-on bag and one carry-on personal item. Personal items typically are lap top, a purse, a small tote bag or camera bag...

So maybe your tube could be your personal item.

I have traveled with tubes (the ones you put paintings rolled up in). I've tied it to my backpack a couple times and a few times I held it in my hand. Wasn't ever a problem.

I would give American a call and just double check.
