My wife and I will be going to St. Thomas in March for 6 nights as part of an anniversary getaway. We are both adventurous people but also like quiet places.
Can anyone recommend activites you would consider "must" see or do on St. Thomas or other nearby islands?
Also some travel companies recommend getting a passport versus using a birth certificate/drivers license for identification in re-entering the US mainland. Does it make alot of difference?
Thanks in advance for any help!
I'm moving to STT at the end of the month, and was just there for six days during the job interview process. There's no end of fun on STT, but I believe St. John is a must. As you may have found in your island research, it is largely national park and has just about 3,000 people, relative to 50-60,000 on STT. The ferry over is just $6, (or was it $6 roundtrip?) as I recall. You can get the usual tours. You can also simply walk to the national park headquarters, check the map and take a trail (less than a mile) up (great views of the bay) and back down to a wonderfully private beach. When I was there, there were no more than six people on the beach, spread over several hundred yards.

You will not have any problem using the birth certificate/driver license. It will not take any longer to clear than if you have a passport. You will clear at the St.Thomas airport after check in.
Everyone likes different things so give some ideas of what "entertainment" means to you. Your age also has bearing. Give us some more info.

Jim,
Thanks for the info. on the passport issue. My wife and I are in our mid 30s. We enjoy golfing, shopping (wife mostly), visiting museums/historical sites, botanical gardens and going to dance clubs for milder activities. We have parachuted, parasailed, and canoed down rivers to name a few activities we've done. We are also open to trying new actvities.
I hope this gives you a better idea.

You can do 2 things at once....while shopping in downtown you can view the historical buildings with their rich heritage. The old fort is also in downtown. The St Peter great house botanical gardens are also nice on the mountain.
If you want to be entertained go to "Latitude 18" on Thursday, Friday or Saturday night. Winter season resident (20+ years), Dick (the short name for Richard...this site won't print)Solberg and the Sun Mountain Band performs there. Latitude 18 doesn't look like much, but one of those fun places the stateside locals frequent. Get there before 7 if you want a seat and plan to have dinner there too. If you get there and get a seat you are sure to have a great time.
Take a trip to St.John...its a short ferry ride and then get a tour.
Rent a car for your stay and get out and eat at some of the fine eating establishments at night. While downtown plan to eat lunch at the "Greenhouse", an open air eatery on the waterfront. Great entertainment to watch the tourist while having lunch and food is always great there. Just enjoy the great weather on the beach or around the pool....a great place to do NOTHING!
Craig:
It is correct that your birth cert. or driver's license will work just fine if you only intend to visit the US Virgins. However, once there many people find themselves wanting to take a daytrip to the British Virgins (they are just a short ferry ride away) and that is NOT going to happen without a passport.
Also, during my most recent trip in December I found a new restaurant. Whale of a Tale is located in Redhook across the street from Duffy's and upstairs from Molly Malone's. The food was out of this world. If they are serving the salmon chowder it is a must. If you go ask for a table outside with Tina as your server. Tell her Mike and Liz from the Reef sent you.
Mike, Jim, Roger,
Thank you all for the information and advice. I greatly appreciate the help that you each have provided.
