Our anniversary falls in September, and we were thinking about going to the Carribean this year. Unfortunately, September seems to be THE month for hurricanes in the Carribean, and while I realize that a major hurricane is probably unlikely, is September going to be generally stormy anyway? Would we be better off pushing our trip back a few months (i.e. December)? Thanks
As far as the weather generally in September - as long as there aren't any storms, the weather should be our typical sunny, warm and breezy weather. Here in St. Croix we seem to be getting a lot more rain this year than previous years. You can check out average rainfalls and temps on www.weather.com.
I've had many people come and visit me in August and September (during the height of the hurricane season). None of my guests have ever been here through a storm. They all knew there was a chance of a storm hitting, but they weren't concerned about their trip being "ruined" by a storm.
You might want to pick your location and then check with the place you want to stay at. Find out what they do with their guests if a storm does hit. Also - what is their cancellation policy, etc. in the event of a storm. You might also want to check with the airline you choose to fly. This way if a storm does hit, you'll know what to expect.
Usually there is enough warning before a storm hits and you would probably be able to fly home early if you didn't want to wait out a storm.
Rates will probably be cheaper in September than in December.
I hope this helps!

Trip insurance! We push it heavily for yacht charter vacations for the summer months. www.insuremytrip.com can give you a number of options with different companies. Well worth it in September.

Depending on where you fly from, you could have a trip ruined by a plane that can't get out from the USA due to snow (that's how us New Englanders think anyway). So in other words, its a weather gamble almost regardless except for the Spring and late Fall. Just get good travel insurance, be prepared mentally and make some plans. That being said, my brother in law went to the VIs one late August several years ago and got nailed by a hurricane and spent his vacation in a cement bunker, not much fun. Can't go in October? That might be a great safe bet?
And, should you decide to come in September, keep a close eye on the "Tropical Udate" at :50 after each hour on the Weather Channel in the week preceeding your trip so you can see if cancelling your trip would be necessary. Trip cancellation insurance is a wise idea, too. (JMHO)
