Last week I packed up some of my clothes in a box to mail back to the states so that I wouldn't have to check too much luggage. I wrapped a bottle of good rum in bubble wrap inside of the clothes. When my box came to my house it had been opened by "Homeland Security" and they had removed the rum. Does anyone know if you can retrieve what they have stolden from you? Was i supposed to know that I couldn't send this? Seems to me that I have done it before and this didn't happen.

I'm pretty sure that its illegal to send alcohol in the mail. If not, every teenage kid on earth would be having someone to mail them some - no need for fake IDs! 🙂

Actually, that's not altogether correct. I don't know all the particulars of the above case, but alcohol can be sent through the mail. I have in fact mail ordered from companies which carry the Cruzan Rum flavors I can't get locally and received them through the mail like anything else.

wow then please share that address/website. What kind of taxes do they charge - taxes are crazy in WV on alcohol. I would love to order some Cruzan, but depending on the price/taxes. A local liquor store will order anything I want if they don't have it.

Might have something to do with the IMPORTING of liquor which you need a license to do. But I doubt it was TSA who was thirsty because I don't think that they check mail. Might have been Postal Authority tho if you used the USMail as there are regulations as to weight, content, size, etc of mailed packages. The Wine of the Month Clubs and other suppliers do ship alcohol under their license to do so but don't think they use USMail.

There are certain States that do not allow alcohol to be shipped into. I tried to ship wine from the Napa region to my sister in FL and no-can-do. I could ship it to several other States, however. But that was a few years ago. Not sure what website would be the best referral for what States allow shipping of alcohol and which do not.

if you go to this webpage you can find out if alcohol can be shipped to your state. FL and PA are two states that prohibit out of state shipments. Those states that do allow shipment, the shipments are sent UPS and you must be have a person sign who is at least 21 years of age.

You cannot send alcohol through the US Postal System or I should say you are prohibited by postal regulation.

From what I have experienced, shipment of any alcohol OUT of the U. S. Virgin islands is prohibited due to our Duty-Free Status. I have seen the merchandise seized and a nasty letter sent to the sender threatning possible fines, etc.

Someone told me this weekend that there are no open container laws in the U.S. Virgin Islands and that you can even drive with a beer.

Is this true?

Thanks,
Doug

I believe that a lack open container law DOES NOT allow you to drink while driving.

But more serious than that is if they pull you over for no seat belt. Very serious offense in the VI's.

And if you're pulled over for violating the seat belt law, you're holding an open container and you stink of booze, then you're looking at the inside of a jail cell as opposed to just a ticket! Cheers!

EL: If you were doing all that at the same time (although you did forget to include speeding) I think you'd end up dead in a ditch way before the police got to you...

God forbid...then I'd be on a crime website. It's way past your bedtime, isn't it? 🙂

Almost there (to bed that is - but it's only 10:30!) and flipped back on here to pass on this article from The Source, just posted, regarding teen drinking and the open container law. Very interesting and appropriate!

Since our State's legal limits are basically one 5 oz glass of wine or 1 beer...no one I know goes out much in the evening. We have road blocks all over the place. We entertain in the neighborhood and ride bikes or walk! It's a hurt on restaurants dining hours, but kept people safe. If we dine out at night, we're home by 7 pm. Not much different than we would practice on STJ.

Just curious, EL, but is your state law relatively new? The reason I ask is that such a law has been in effect in the UK for YEARS, everyone is used to it and families/groups pick a designated driver for the night and stay out as late as they want. Nobody thinks twice about it, t's just accepted as the norm. Cheers!

..and there in lies the problem, STT, no one in our group wants to be the d.d., we enjoy our adult refreshments too much! 🙂
Yes, they did just lower it again in our State.
