Just trying to stay legal here, but does anyone know what the rules/laws are about taking beer/rum punch etc. out on a rental dinghy?

I don't know if there are rules/laws/policies either. I do know that if I was out in a dinghy and things got weird, I'd rather be dealing with the situation sober than drunk.

U.S. Virgin Islands law prohibits anyone from boating while under the influence (BUI) -- that is, operating any vessel while under the influence of intoxicating liquor (alcohol) or any controlled substance. Alcohol contributes to about one-third of all boating accidents in the U.S.

U.S. Virgin Islands law states that the following conditions determine if you are boating under the influence: • If your blood alcohol concentration is 0.08% or greater as measured by a breath, blood or urine test, that result is considered “prima facie” evidence that you are under the influence. • If your blood alcohol concentration is greater than 0.05% but less than 0.08% as measured by a breath, blood or urine test, that fact along with other evidence can be used to determine if you are under the influence.

U.S. Virgin Islands law establishes the following penalties for BUI: • Upon a first violation, those convicted of boating while intoxicated may be fined up to $1,000 and/or imprisoned for up to one year. • Upon subsequent violations, those convicted of boating while intoxicated may be fined up to $2,000 and/or imprisoned for up to two years.

By operating a vessel on the territorial waters of the U.S. Virgin Islands, you have consented to be tested for alcohol or drugs if requested by a law enforcement officer who has reason to believe that you are operating under the influence. Refusal to be tested can be used as evidence against you in court.

Hey, thanks for the responses and I'm sorry if this was misinterpreted.

We aren't a bunch of college frat boys looking to go out on a dingy and get lit up. I was just talking about throwing in a 6 pack for 4 people to enjoy over the 8 hours out exploring and snorkeling in the sun (along with LOTS of water!). I just wanted to know if it was illegal or against the rules to have it out there considering that nearly every charter boat has an open bar. I didn't want to do anything wrong and was just checking here to see if anyone knew the answer.

dallas, The only limiting factor is number of people and size of your cooler. Got to all fit in the dink. Keep in mind it's a little difficult to get ice in Cruz Bay or at least it was last year. Makes a difference if you coming over by Ferry and your on foot. No cooler on Noah's Ark dinks. All the other issues are up to your own good judgement. It's a great way to spend the day.

Bob, in November we took a soft sided cooler on the dinghy with us and didn't have a problem at all.
