I've never seen one. Terminal is too small to need a map.

What was it that you were uncertain about that made you wish for a map?

Hello Diane,
When you land in STT you will exit the plane outdoors (have sunglasses handy) and security will point you in the direction of the baggage claim. If by chance you are misdirected, go to the left side of the building (all glass walls) until you see a turnstile type door. There is one room for baggage claim and one long wall of different rental car offices, hotel offices, etc. in that room. When you leave STT you will go thru customs and then to one room which is the waiting area for all flights. Have a good trip!

Hello Diane,
Be sure and look out the window as you come in to STT. It is a great view and makes you wish you could ask the pilot to circle once, just to see it all from the air. It was breathtaking to me. Usually the pilot will tell you when you are passing San Juan if possible to see it before you get to STT. That was the best part about flying in. All those cruise ship passengers miss that opportunity.

When you leave you are required to go thru customs and immigration. Actually it is being handled now by one agent. You also have to go thru TSA security. Again, this is leaving. There is the isolated case, like the AA Miami flight that leaves at 7 am, that you will go thru elsewhere.

Landing on STT is a trip! Look out the window when you're landing...you come straight over the water, and there are these jagged rocks sticking out of the water at the end of the runway. What a freaky experience!! Then you hit this (in my opinion) very short runway, and stop very quickly! I have been going to STJ for 9 years now, and that landing always makes me cringe. What a wimp huh?

Hi Jo-Ann
With the Modern hi-tech aircrafts that are used today you shouldn't have any problems landing in St thomas. The runway is sufficient for all of the aircrafts that utilize the airport. The approach to the runway is similair to approaching the airport at La Guardia in New York , you approach it over water. If I am not mistaking both La Guardia and St Thomas Airports are the same length. What you should do though, is look out of the window if you are sitting on the left side of the aircraft and enjoy the beautiful senery from the aircraft on the approach.

Good luck

Never flew into NY. STT is about the only place we fly into, except Boston. Boston's a trip too, with all those aircraft circling waiting to land. But I wouldn't give up going to USVI's for anything, not even those big rocks sticking out of the water! What a beautiful place! Diane, I know that you will fall in love with the USVI'S. You will become addicted to the places there. Please let us know what you think. Will be looking forward to your report. Where are you staying while there? We always stay on the east end of STJ. We have already booked our trip for 2005. Can't wait! Have a great time Diane.

Jo-Ann, thank you very much - I'm sure my *future* husband and I will keep comming back. We are already talking about buying property on the islands to retire to! We are already planning another trip for our 5yr aniversary - but I hope it is definately sooner than that. Will definately give a trip report and a link to pictures once we return. Only 9 more days until we leave!! WOO HOO!!!

We are staying on Maria Bluff, at a private villa hosted by Destination St. John. I can't wait, it has a pool and fantastic sunset views. Renting a jeep as well..and getting married on Hawksnest beach. 🙂

The runway at STT is 7000' x 150' not a bad size at all and more than enough at sea level for any airline flying in there (obviously). The reason it seems short is that a lot of major airports are well over 10,000" in lenth and some are as long as 12000' depending on field elevation.

Not sure if anyone cares about that but thought I would through that info out there just in case you needed some trivial info today.

(Headed for St. John in 64 days! May never leave 🙂
