I have a four-hour layover in St. Thomas on May 14. Does it make sense to leave the airport and see the island for a little while? What would be the best use of that time?

Ten minutes to downtown Charlotte Amalie by taxi. If you have a large carry on, it probably is more hassle dragging it around than worth going but you can get decent meal, do some shopping.

Your call.

Hello Linda,

You could also walk down to Emerald Beach and spend a couple hours there... have lunch, have a few drinks, sit on the beach.

What time is your layover?

I didn't know it was possible to travel someplace w/ a layover in St. Thomas. I'm just curious, where are you traveling to and from?

my best guess is that you're traveling to st croix. is that correct? if not st. coix, then someplace down island. let us know.

i personally would take islander's suggestion. i don't think it is worth it to drag your bags around st thomas. plus lines for customs can be long. i haven't been over there in a couple months, but the last few times i was there you had to drag all of your bags (including checked bags) from the counter to customs. i'll be doing some work over there tomorrow, so i'll let you know if that is still true. if it is, you won't really have much of an option to go anywhere. when you have a layover in st thomas, you can't check you bags to your final destination until you actually check-in when you're physically in st thomas. this is becuase you have to clear customs, so you can't have your bags transfered to the airline you're using out of st thomas. it's a bummer, but it's the only way. if that's all confusing, i appologize.

If this person is traveling from the states to St. Croix then they can check their bags all the way through. I have seen people come off of a flight from St. Thomas to St. Croix and pick up bags where the baggage tag originated somewhere in the states and was checked all the way to St. Croix. As for traveling to down-island.. that depends if LIAT or whoever it is has a baggage agreement with the airline that is arriving into St. Thomas.

If they're traveling from St. Croix to the States via St. Thomas, they would have to clear customs in St. Thomas, so I dont think they could check the bags all the way through. If they're traveling from down-island to the States, I don't think they could because I believe they have to clear customs upon arrival in St. Thomas as well as when they leave St. Thomas.
