Hi - I'm looking into booking a family vacation to St. John, and am wondering the best way to book airfare. Do most people fly direct from Miami? Is that the cheapest alternative? We are in Boston and are a family of 5. I'm finding that the air is unjustifiably expensive from here. Any suggestions would be extremely appreciated.

Thanks so much!

Heather

We fly out of Newark on Continental and some on our flights are Bostonians. Depending on when you're going Continental still has some cheap fares- and is direct.
Also, AA is direct to St. Thomas from JFK.

We have flown out of Boston(bos) , New York (jfk) and Bradlee(bdl) which is our home base. Boston and JFK have non stops and JFK was like $800. cheaper on AA non stop this year than Bradlee with 1 stop. Got RT for 2 for $600. Checked Boston repeatedly and they were much higher. Booked in Sept. for Feb. My only suggestion would be to stop in San Juan on other than a non-stop. Miami from Boston lengthens your trip by 2-3 hrs. and some 1200+ miles. We always liked San Juan. Never a problem there but always fly American. Non Stops are best. Keep in mind, depending on when you fly, that a connection anywhere where there could be snow could be a problem. In the winter we always connect where that's not an issue so that when "wheels up" your good to go..

There was a good thread not long ago on this topic

My cut - avoid Miami at any cost! There is no reason to begin or end your vacation mad and the chance of that occuring in MIA goes up significantly!

Try Tuesday or Wednesday vice the standard Sat to Sat.

I have bought tickets to SJU when there was a good deal, and then switch to a smaller airline to jump over to STT.

American has the cheapest fares into STT, save for Spirit, If you book on AA.COM. I'm flying my mother down here next month and I got her a ticket from O'hare, round trip, for $340.00. Some Spirit flights are non stop, which avoids Miami AND San Juan. Guess it just depends on what you want, but my vote is for American, booking through the American Airlines website.

Safe Journey's to y'all!!

Since I don't know where you are flying from it is hard to answer. We just ticketed 263. from EWR. I just booked my grandaughter from JFK for 265. We have flown from Fort Lauderdale to STT for $9.00

You just need to keep looking and then take what you feel is acceptable.

I fly from Philly non-stop to STT on USAir. Typical fare is $400. Went up dramatically last year....but now seems to be back in the normal $400 range. I book directly through USAir.
