My GF and I are planning our first trip to STJ, and have reserved a week at Windwardside Guest Cottage

http://www.calabashcottages.com/wwsidegc.htm

for June 25-July 2. Additionally, we're coming down early on the 22nd to camp out at Ivan's on Jost for a couple days. Question is: I've been watching the 'net for airfare deals using mainly kayak.com, and I can get r/t for $352 including taxes and fees from DC to STT today.

Is this about as good as it will get, or should I hang a bit longer for a better deal?

Reasonable rule of thumb is anything under $400 is not bad, esp if non-stop. You might see it for <$300 about 3 months out, and then again within 3-4 weeks of departure, but that could be like catching lightening in a bottle with the reduced capacity airlines are running these days.

If you decide to wait, sign up for the new fare tracking/fare alert features kayak has on their Best Fare Buzz page = pretty slick.

I think you should grab it ASAP. The fares that have been mentioned from the east coast to STT have been well over $400, even over $500. I'm booked for JFK to STX at the end of April for $377 RT taxes & fees inc.

Yeah, I thought it sounded like a good deal, but I read somewhere on here that last summer fares from Pittsburgh (a little closer for me than DC) were running under $300... I guess with increased fuel costs I should take these fares and be happy.

I just have to make sure we get into STT in time to catch the ferry to Jost.

I'm using the Kayak buzz... pretty cool.

This fare has a layover in Atlanta, I believe.

On another note, has anyone camped out at Ivan's? Looks pretty fun.

I think I'd go for it.
I jumped on a non-stop Continental flight in March for $446.00 from Newark about 8 weeks ago and checked a couple of days ago and the fight is sold out. The closest Continental was offering was with a layover in San Juan for around $750.00.
It's a gamble... in the whole scheme of it, is it worth a hundred bucks to get it and have it and not worry about it?

I am going in late March from NJ(Newark) to SJU for $59 each way on JetBlue ($160 r/t w/tax) and another $125 r/t from SJU on STT on Caribbean Sun Airline. Total is $285 r/t. JetBlue will NOT be shown on kayak.com.

I live in DC so flights can be slightly more expensive. Fortunately, my in-laws are watching the kids in NJ so it worked out well for me flying out of Newark.

JetBlue rocks!

Good Luck!

Eric

Nice point Cricket... I checked and most flights are about half-full, so still being five months out I best jump on these. I just wish I could get a deal out of PIT (1.5 hour drive) rather than DC (3 hour drive).

Living in the mountains of WV has many advantages, easy access to major air hubs not being one of them 😉

I looked into the SJU route too Eric, but I'm afraid that's might be pushing it in a comfortable buffer between arriving in STJ and the last Jost ferry, and I've heard horror stories aobut SJU transferrs and flights. If I was staying on STT I'd probably give it a go.

We just booked our tickets with Spirit airlines, for only $94 (one way) from Fort Lauderdale. To San Juan will only be $89. They have a special if you book before february 5th.

Phyl,
I kept checking travelocity every day and it just popped up. Usually Travelocity would put me through on AA only to SJU. Alof a sudden there was an offer to fly US Air out of Laguardia instead of JFK to SJU connecting on AA to STX. I didn't hesitate. (I think I said JFK above, sorry it's LGA.)

From DC, $352 is the cheapest you can get, even $500 would be considered a decent fare. Go get it ASAP!!!

Flying in to SJU at 3:15 isnt terribly appealing, but I am all about minimizing travel time during daylight hours. I take the first flight over at 6:45am and I am in SJ by 10:30am at the latest.

I will go sleep on the beach once I get there....

Eric

p.s. Jay -- JetBlue flights are only available on their website -- jetblue.com

MS,
I understand about living out of the way. I live in New Brunswick Canada which is just north and east of Maine (I'm a transplanted American.) To fly from my local airport would have cost me over $1100.00 and 2 layovers. My mom lives in NJ about 45 minutes from Newark, so we'll drive to her place, visit her overnight and fly out of Newark on a nonstop for way less than half the price the next morning.
Good Luck and remember how much peace of mind is worth to you.
