I am just wondering if there is a way to get cheaper airfare from Kansas City to St. Croix in feb. I have looked at the usual site like expedia, cheap flights, side steps etc. and I am finding flights in the low to mid 600s. Any info would be appreciated.

Try Cheapair.com. I just booked tickets to St John and found a very good price from cheapair.com. I have been looking for two weeks just waiting for a good fare and tonight somehow Cheapair just came on my screen so I tried it and found the price almost 100.00 difference from what I almost booked from spirit air. Figure that. Good luck.
Look at Bestfares.com but wait a little bit and see if it comes down any...I think right now they are only publishing fares through January. We always found 21 day booking to have the best prices anyway - but that is during season and who knows what air fares will do within the next 6 months. On Bestfares, keep a watch on the Snooze You Lose and type in your city search - watch it every couple of days. Occasionally they will run real deals, but the deals go quickly. I think you're just a wee bit early to be looking now.
www.skyauction.com will often have good deals, but watch the add on charges, they can be killers.
Farecompare.com is a website that chances the prices of airfares 3 times a day. It use to be used only by travel organizations, but is now available to the public. You're able to get ALL airfares from ALL airlines. I would check a couple times daily to see the rates and see how it goes.
Good luck...finding good airfare is always a challenge.
