Okay, so now we have booked our condo and are set for February 2012. What is the typical airfare we can expect to pay from Minneapolis to St Thomas? I see that SunCountry only runs on Sunday (bummer). I know we can even look at flights yet because it is too far out but just curious as to what is a decent price.

A good price this year from MSP was $500. Many tickets were in the $700 range. Having spent the last two STT/MSP trips dodging storms with delays and re-routes, we might try Sun Country's direct flight next winter so we don't have to deal with that again.

😛 Be prepared for rate shock. I've check prices but you can't get quote for feb 2012 yet. The prices for late Jan 2012 start at 750.00 and go up from there. That the price for 1 stop to STT and 2 stops back home

Those are the fairs I saw and just thought maybe it would get better. I love using SunCountry but see that this year they go Sun-Sun and we have a condo Sat-Sat. They fly on off days just like they changed it this year for MSP-St Maarten to Fri-Fri. Bummer because non-stop is always nice, although I do see they stop even on Sun Country on the way home.

I will keep watching but was just curious on what the fairs typically are. Thanks!

The bad news for us all is that airfares are shooting up across the board, with four fare hikes since January 1 on the major carriers. The spike in oil prices is making it worse, as is the fact that numbers of travelers have bounced back since 9/11, but the airlines have cut service and seats on almost all routes, and are now flying with the highest load factor they've ever had (80% plus...). So the bottom line is don't wait around for too long once the fares are posted, because a year from now they are likely to be significantly higher....

Airfares have definitely gone up. The airlines announced they were cutting routes and increasing fares and they weren't kidding. We fly out of Chicago typically and used to pay in the $430 range. January of 2010 I bought tickets for our October 2010 trip and they were $340 a piece which is the cheapest we'eve ever gotten them, it was also the first time we were unable to find a direct flight. Last month I bought tickets for our July trip(2011) and they were $512 each, with crappy flight times and layovers and that was actually a "good" price compared to what I'd been seeing. I just looked at the same tickets a couple days ago and if we bought them now they'd be $876 each. It really adds up over 4 tickets.
I say that when you see a price you can live with, grab the tickets.
