Hi,

Our group of 22 adults and three small children are traveling to St. Thomas in Dec. on Christmas Eve or Day. Can anyone give us advice on when to buy air for the trip? Right now, air is around $1,100.00 per person RT from St. Louis on American whether you travel earlier in the week or on Christmas Day. Has anyone flown to San Juan and taken the ferry over to St. Thomas? If so, what was your experience like? How about Cape Air?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Good afternoon:
To answer some of your questions regarding your group travel.
Cape Air only hold 10 total - 9 passengers and 1 pilot on each plane.
Depending on when you are looking to return - this might cause more problems than your departure date.
Have you called Delta and US Airways group department?
Never know when it is a good time to purchase tickets anymore, prices changes regulary and often.
It is almost like gambling - how lucky are you will determine if you could get a good price or not, you know.
As far as Ferry is concerned, I think it runs on Saturdays only - you can click on Ferry towards the top and will provide you with the information.
Good luck to you!

mfinn:

Try Delta.....I just checked this on www.kayak.com .......leaving Dec 25, returning Jan 1.... STL/STT........$707.

Forget the ferry from San Juan.

Suggest you reserve both air & lodging as early as possible since this is (very) prime season.

mfinn and Future Islander:
There is a difference between trying to book for 1 person vs 22 people plus 3 children - which would make total of 25.
You will get a different prices.
Unless you can book 22 people on kayak.com?
Any further questionsmfinn, you can send me PM if you like.
Good luck to you - this is very challanging time to get a good airfare especially for 25 people.

53jmoon:

I tried for 6 people (the max that kayak would allow)......the site showed several flight versions for the $707 fare.......so, yes, I believe you could get the 25 seats at that price....if you booked now.

mfinn:

You would need to call Delta.....or try a travel agent.

With that many people you're better off looking for a direct flight as even if you can connect with one of the "puddle jumpers" from PR to STT they're small planes and can't accommodate all of you. To clarify the negative responses on the ferry routine from PR to STT, it has no regular schedule. Useless in your case. Cheers and hope you get everything sorted out!

You need a good travel agent or tour company to put that many tickets together. Forget the ferry. It doesn't run on a regular basis and in December if the Christmas winds are up a two to three hour ferry ride straight into heavy seas and winds would be a recipe for sea sickness. You also would have to get you whole party across the island of PR the airport is in San Juan and you would have to go to Farjado to catch the ferry an easy hour one way.
As for SanJuan if you can get cheaper flights to there you could call Seaborn Airlines or Ace Flight Center in St Thomas and charter a couple of their seaplanes for the connection. That will run around $200 a person round trip. I agree given the size of your party a flight directly into STT will be better. There was an article last week in the paper that Delta was adding several flights a day from Atlanta which is one of their hubs.

Do you have to fly right on Chrismas eve/day? According to consumer reports, they say it is usually cheapest to fly on a Tues or Wed. Also earliest in the am or later in the pm is cheaper. With 25 people going, I would also recommend contacting the airline by phone.

The earlier you buy the better I think. I just bought flights for MIA-STT & BOS-STT on AA today
for April, as I recently heard that airfares were on the rise. What I don't get is why is the MIA-STT
flight ONLY $20 cheaper each way than the BOS-STT one???
Unless you are not flexible with your dates I would not travel on or right before the holiday.

Good luck!

We bought tickets for our January trip yesterday. My husband had read prices will go up as oil will go up. Apparently others read it too. As we were booking we watched the cheapest flight disappear.

Hi there,

Sounds like you're organizing quite a large group! For comparison sake, I'll tell you that back in March I booked a honeymoon flight to STT from St. Louis (although we're returning to a different city) on American for $469/person for travel in September. Since I made the booking, the cost actually dropped by $50 at one point! I don't know about airfares for December, but from other folks' postings, it looks like that's high season in STT. And yes, airfare will be higher. Your $1,100 airfare on American seemed a bit ridiculous. So, I took the liberty of checking www.orbitz.com for you. I used a departure date of Dec. 24; return Jan. 1.

You can get R/T airfare for $523/person (incl all taxes & fees) on Delta. Flights on American were nearly twice that much. The flights go via Atlanta and the connection times aren't extremely long. Flights depart St. Louis at various times (6:00am, 7:25am, 8:39am, 9:45am, 12:20pm, 6:30pm). The flights departing STT are more limited (2:30pm & 5:10pm). But personally, I would mind either of those times - more time on the beach!!! The prices starts to increase from there for other flights. I don't how many seats they have available for this price, but my advice would be to book ASAP!

Good luck!

P.S. - Airfares can vary drastically by date. For example, I just checked Orbitz again on a return from STT for you on Jan. 2. The same flights on Delta price at $728. But returning on Dec. 30 or 31 prices at a jaw-dropping $261 (incl taxes & fees)!!! Need I say more...book it, NOW!!!
