Hi Everyone,
My local stateside newspaper had an article on being left handed. Being a lefty myself I found it a very interesting article. The following is 2 paragraphs that explain why we drive on the left and the right.
"British drivers who drive on the left can thank their right-handed forebearers. Most fuedal travelers carried their weapons in their dominant right hands. When they encountered a stranger on the road, it was safer to pass on the left, so the weapon was between them and the stranger."
"Famous left handed French ruler Napoleon Bonaparte changed the rule of the road by ordering his armies to march on the right - so Napoleon could keep his sword arm between him and the advancing enemy."
"Since Napoleons decision, areas of the world colonized by the French and other nations apart from Britian have always driven on the right."
I thought that this was interesting and would share it with this wonderful board. Being American and living mainly stateside, I'm not sure why we drive on the right. I know it can be tricky when we arrive in the VI to remember to drive on the left, but can you imagine being in Europe and having to change back and forth at different borders. At least that's what I think they do, I've never been to Europe, maybe someone with more knowledge can chime in.
Here in the USVI, we still drive on the left thanks to the donkeys!
Either way it is due to the asses be it the "divine rite", elected or four footed variety.
Yep, donkeys are like 'most' people...right-handed (or hoofed, as it were), which means their dominant eye is their right....since their eys are on the side of their heads, two donkey approaching each other will ALWAYS go to the left of each other...it's just natural for them...(gotta check out that other 'ass', ya know! Haha!). When cars showed up, the donkey guys beat them half to death trying to teach them to walk on the right...mush easier to teach us to drive ob the left....also, with the steering wheel on the left, and your sitting on the left and driving on the left....when you get too close to the edge of the road, you can gauge just how close you can get without tumbling down the mountain....
The story that Marty gave is the one that I have heard.
So LEFT is RIGHT!
Makes sense, RIGHT, or is it LEFT?
The bottom line is who cares, it is what it is.
Billd
Stay left - honk horn frequently and aim at something cheap.
If I follow this logic, and it does make sense, then driving on the left and steering from the left puts the passenger (my wife) between my weapon and my enemy.
Interesting....
