A QUESTION TO THE LOCALS
What type of african rituals are still done in the bvi besides the bamboula dance? Is there any other african derived dances indigenous to the bvi. Is there wake rituals for the dead etc.
Hello Rey,
This site and board focuses on the United States Virgin Islands, not the British Virgin Islands. They are really close but different.
Are you interested in this information for the USVI as well?

yes. thanks
Hello Rey,
In an article that I read recently but that was written I believe back in the late 70's, the author mentioned the following Africanism, as he refered to them, in VI culture. A sense of dignity and extreme sensitivity to ridicule. The mocko-jumbi drum rhythms, the patterns of plaiting female children's hair, some words in English Creole and native dance body movements. Dances... bamboula, bamboshay.
The practices dealing with the dead here are very Western, in my opinion. Funeral homes, viewings, mass service, prayers for the dead at church...
Carnival has its roots based in a combination of African and European traditions.
In another article I recall the mention of various superstitions and folklore as being carried over.
Hope that helps some. Dr. Emanuel and Dr. Sprauve at the University of the VI would be good sources to ask about this.
