I have a questions for you islanders. We will be arriving Saturday April 30. I read the boards about the parade. We will be renting a car at the airport and was wondering how we will get to the Morningstar with the parade in town. Any suggestions???

You can go "over the hills" and bypass all downtown traffic and congestion. Your escort or taxi driver will know which way to go! If you are unsure, contact your hotel or villa rental agent and they can assist you with directions.

Hello Susan,

What time are you getting in?

The roads affected by the parade route are Kronprindsens Gade, Main Street, Hospital Gade and Berge Gade.

Veteran's Drive, that runs through town along the waterfront, is open - so you can take that route. It’s the easiest. It is 30 on the map. 30 runs basically the length of the island, west to east. You just turn right (east) onto 30 when getting off Airport road. And stay on 30 all the way to 315 which leads to the Marriott resorts (Morningstar & Frenchman's Reef).

You can avoid town altogether by going through Northside but I think dealing with some possible congestion on a straight route would be easier then sending you around the island, unless you have been here before and are somewhat familiar with the roads. I am looking at a map trying to put together the route numbers for avoiding town and I am confused 🙂 And I've driven it lots of times.

Avoiding town completely would go something like: Turn left out of the airport road unto 30 heading west. Pass the University and then Brewers Bay. Head up a steep road and at the first Y in the road turn right onto 301. Then turn left onto 33 (might was well take a scenic drive). Follow 33 all the way to Mafolie. Get on 37. Hey you can stop at Drakes Seat for a little bit. Then continue on 40, Skyline Drive to Donoe Road, 39. At the base of 39 (just past Home Depot) turn right onto 38. Follow 38 to the bottom of the hill and at the stop light turn left onto 313, which intersects with 30. At Wendy’s (fast food) go to your left and then follow it past Havensight, where the ships dock most of the time, and toward 315 that goes to Morningstar.

Well, Susan... you are definitely getting "too much information" today!

I am sure that you will be fine! But you will not pass the University, as the airport road pops directly out onto Route 30... The University lies further west.

Islander may be right about just taking Route 30 past all the action, if you get in before 6 pm when the parade begins to break up and people start heading home or to the carnival village.

So... when are you getting in??? *smile*

If they get in while the parade is on, traffic runs smoothly on the waterfront. But late is definately a problem!

We'll be getting in between 2 and 3pm. Thanks for all the help. I can't wait to be there.

You should be okay to drive straight thru at that time. Just hope for a long parade! If it is short, it may be over by then, but lately they have ended closer to 6!

Hi! On the same note, our flight leaves STT at about noon. How early should I leave from East End? We will have a rental car to return. No checkable bags. Do I need to be at the airport one hour before flight time? Should I consider returning the car a day or 2 early, and taxi to the air port, or will it be too busy to get one? Thanks guys. I posed these questions months ago , and lost the answers!!

Give yourself about one hour to an hour and a half to get to the airport from the east end. I can do it in 45 minutes, but I am allowing for possible traffic and/or slower driving due to unfamiliarity with the roads.

On weekends the traffic is not so bad, but I'd check the cruise ship schedule to get a handle on how bad things will be with extra taxi movement. There is a link to the cruise ship schedule on this web site, at the top. Click the "Cruise Ship Guide and Schedule" link.

No need to stress about returning the car early, in my opinion. But, factor in an extra 15 minutes for that as well.

You need to be at the airport at least 2 hours before flight time. Between having to go through security and immigration and customs, you will be okay. One hour is not enough.
