We are planning a trip to St. John in late May, and many of the places we are looking at do not have A/C. I have been to USVI many times in the past, but usually had A/C. I'm from Florida, so I'm used to the heat, but do you think we would be miserable with no A/C at that time of year, especially sleeping? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

It really depends on the location of your villa...is it at a higher altitude, is it facing the sun? We have no A/C in our condo, and yes it gets a little warm in July-September, but it's not unbearable. In those hot summer months, we sleep with just a sheet and the fan on, and while it's just a bit too hot to snuggle up with your loved one under the covers, we do sleep comfortably.

I agree with Andrea, but would like to add that if you are on the South side getting the afternoon sun, that is the worst as the house heats up late in the day and doesn't have time to cool off. We too have no a/c, but live on the North side which tends to be a little cooler! Actually, most of us who live here do not have a/c!

There is really no way to predict. In May 2005 we stayed in 2 different villas (long story) in Coral Bay. Normally that area is pretty breezy. One of the villas was even perched high on a hill with the ability to accept cross breezes. Unfortunately that side of the island was windless for the entire week. We used ceiling fans, even wet towels at times. It was incredibly uncomfortable. We could hardly sleep most nights and we absolutely needed to vacate the house between 11 and 5 due to the heat (which normally wouldn't be a problem except that our "friends" whom we vacationed with didn't roll out of bed until then). Again, this wasn't the norm...but anything is a possibility down there. If you tend to get irritable in never-ending heat, get a place with an air conditioner just in case. We live in San Diego and having no breeze during the night was a rude awakening. Just be prepared for anything.

By the way, what is your price point? My mom stayed at Drake's View in May and she said it had wonderful breezes. Of course, it rained the entire week, so that would stand to reason. Regardless, it's positioned perfectly for a good cross-breeze. It's in the $3000 range. Also, on redweek.com I saw an ad for a 3BR villa at the westin for $2750. The dates are May 19-26. I have an account, so if you want me to put you in touch with the owners of that villa, I can. If you don't mind staying in a resort, and don't mind missing an ocean view, this is a really great deal. The 3BR villas are 2800 square feet, have a private pool, spa, 3 bedrooms, and you get to experience all of the resort amentities. Plus, there is air conditioning, washer/dryer, full kitchen....it's just like any other private villa sans view.
