We heard that the Cruzan Estate Diamond 5 year has been discontinued. (I think I had a post about that recently and it was confirmed - DH just loved this stuff and it's very difficult for us to find in the Chicago area). Now, it is no longer shown on Cruzan's website. Two questions:

1) question for on-islanders: Have any of you noticed if it is still on store shelves? (Thinking that if there is still a supply around someplace I would try to get it ordered through a major liquor chain here at home.)

2) question for bartenders or rum fanciers (on-island or off-island): Is there any other rum that the same mellow hint of caramel flavor as the Diamond? A friend told me that Mount Gay Eclipse is a close second but have had DH try that as yet.

Thanks for the help!

I love Cruzan dark rum, but I gotta' hand it over to Pussers' - Great body, and flavor.
I've been working behind a bar for @ 18 years, and it's a matter of your own particular taste, if you ask me.
Mt. Gay is a good rum, as well. I don't know about the Diamond 5 yr, but I'm looking forward to trying it.- I'll make a point of it!
Good luck!
Smiles-
MJ

Margy,
I'll look for it next time I go shopping. Do you want me to p/u some for you? I know you are going to STX, not STT! Anyone from STX that can get it for Margy's next trip?

Sherri - you are too nice! I was thinking that if it's still around that I might get one of the big liquor store chains here to try to get it. Yes, we are going to STX again - maybe I should put in a provision list early - lol. Seriusly, I guess at some point Paul is going to have to bite the bullet and find a replacement - hope there is something out there that is close in flavor.

If you need a substitute for Cruzan 5 yr. old rum, I would suggest trying Mt. Gay's Extra Old. Even better than their Eclipse.

Some of the aged Appleton's are pretty fine for sipping rums. Rhum Clement from the French Islands makes a top notch aged cognac style rum as well.

Thanks, Bassman, for the recommendation. Looking for something with that caramel tone - will try the Mt. Gay Extra Old - I think we might be able to get that there.

The Sparky's store in St John (by the park) still has some - maybe 12 bottles. It has been discontinued - maybe to concentrate on the flavors? Those seem to be the most popular.

Premiere Wines and Spirits is the distributor here, but I think they're out of it. You'd have to check with individual stores to see if anybody has any left on the shelves. I'll check more stores on Sat.

My guess would be it was discontinued to make room for the flavors and other stuff that can be made more quickly -- better return.

The dear liquor distributor in my life who used to sell Appleton just told me to recommend Appleton Estate V/X. I have had the Estate Reserve, and I know it was pretty good.
