What is the status of the Jaime Cockayne case? Has it gone to trial yet? Are the suspects still running free? Do the USVI police ever solve violent crimes against tourists or do they mainly give out tickets for using cellphones and not wearing seat belts?
"Do the USVI police ever solve violent crimes against tourists..."
Does it matter who the violent crimes are against?
Re: The Cockayne issue:
The police have made no moves to prosecute this case beyond where it is, which is:
Still out on ridiculously low bond.
Still wearing "collars" around their ankles which don't work.
Still no date for trial...
Still not communicating with the family when they ask questions. Ever....and so it goes.
Jeanie's down, but she's not out.
The arrest and conviction rate is low....police understaffed and compromised. The good ones are very frustrated. And crimes happen to all, tourists and locals alike.
Having said all that, if you're not hangin out at some youngster bar in the middle of the night, I wouldn't worry about my personal safety at all. Still not a huge issue there. Enjoy.

BEFORE you go taking this advice, do yourself a favor and read a few days worth of the Virgin Islands Daily News. And I don't mean the NEXT FEW DAYS, go back and read the archives for the last month or so. If the poster thinks personal safety is not an issue at all here, then I don't know what to tell you other than my girlfriend will NOT walk downtown alone at night certain places. I mean, let's not sugar coat reality here, there is a HUGE crime problem here. Read the first 9 pages of today's paper and see how many CURRENT crime reltaed stories you find.

Most women would not walk downtown alone at night in any town. Walking alone at night anyplace has always been a danger for women. Men aren't accustomed to such restrictions, but the world is changing, thugs with guns are more plentiful, and now even sleepy Chapel Hill, NC, is dangerous in the middle of the night.
