I have the opportunity to decorate a lovely waterfront home on STT(I just decorate - but owner pays for decor), in exchange for use of said home. I've looked at some many villas over the years and have always seen really colorful bedding, etc...things ith fish and turtles swimming....Caribbean colors. Where does this stuff come from? Is there one company that is favored? Any help is most appreciated.

Blu,
When you find out, let me know!!!!! I simply go on-line and search which of course takes HOURS!!!! 🙂
I also try to get as many home decor catalogs as possible and this helps. Am currently looking for a new bedding set for Stone Cottage- I already have a high quality, beautiful set from Spiegel's, but it isn't bright enough and I don't think it will show up well in our up coming photo shoot. It will look nicer in Rockworks for sure! I have ordered quite a bit thru Spiegel's and have mixed feelings about quality. Have had to send one set back the the other was very nice, but I was a little disappointed in quality. I also receive Domestication's catalog, but again MOST of the time, they are not good enough in quality. One villa owner I know actually had her own bedding made from fabrics she chose and they are very, very nice. This was at L' Esperance. You could try Tommy Bahama, not sure as I haven't tried it myself. Since you have a wealth of places to go up there, you may want to even talk to a designer and see if they may be willing to offer any help. Just act like you are a buyer if you have to!
I am constantly cking out "Bed, Bath, and Beyond", and any stores of the like. Of course, I have to do it all on-line which takes all the time! Is money an issue? Tell me more! You didn't mention this to me and I remember our talk of bedding while you were here!
Any input from "keep left" and the owner of Villa Satori?
Shipping to the Virgin Islands can also be difficult. We have found things we have wanted only to find out we aren't acknowledged here in the VI. In this case, I have them shipped to family and then mailed again from there. More money! Any info. you come across would be helpful to me as well. Oh, and I love some of the stuff from Pottery Barn Teen catalog, but they only go up to queen size bedding and I need King. Pottery Barn does ship here tho and I used their curtains for SC. Good Luck! 🙂

I'm not a villa owner, but I get tons of mail order catalogs. Try looking online at the Company Store. Also, anything by Dean Miller should fit the bill.

Hi Sherri, you remember that I walked you through and told you that a remodeling project was in the works. Ok, well, on Friday he asked me to spearhead the project to decorate "my house" how I wanted - and I am supposed to email the layout and begin ordering the items. Since you've see every nook of the house, you can probably give me some great ideas.

Not sure of total budget specifics, but have a go-ahead of bedding and floor coverings. Paint is his job. Appliances were replaced earlier this week (yay! fridge was rusting on exerior face). Deck needed serious repair to tiles.....forthcoming.

I know YOU volunteered, at the time, to be the decorator......but YOU have your own villas, right? (greedy girl!!!!)

Don't you have enough fun with your two villas? Trying to move in on mine!!

(just kidding)

Toledo, thanks for the info! MG, I lucked out on this one, for sure. Guess I shouldn't play the powerball lotto, since my luck is surely tapped out.

Hi Bluwater,

I'm so glad you asked this question! I hope to get some ideas too. I don't get to decorate a villa in the islands, but I am decorating our sun porch with things that remind me of St John and the islands. It's difficult to find things that aren't...cheesy -- for a lack of a better word. I don't know if these things will suit your style, but LL Bean has some breezy, beach-home-type decor currently available. Our home is a 1940s Cape Cod with arched doorways and white trim -- so items with a cottage feel, like those LL Bean is offering, work ok for the sun room of this house. Whereas I LOVE all of the Tommy Bahama stuff, but it just looks silly in my living room next to the fireplace, for example. ha! :o)

I like this wreath...

http://www.llbean.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?storeId=1&catalogId=1&langId=-1&categoryId=33812&sc1=Search&feat=sr

They also have seashell sheets...

http://www.llbean.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?storeId=1&catalogId=1&langId=-1&categoryId=21257&sc1=Search&feat=sr

Many of their inexpensive furniture pieces come in a porch blue color that is very tropical:

http://www.llbean.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?page=painted-cottage-bench&categoryId=44593&storeId=1&catalogId=1&langId=-1&parentCategory=5271&cat4=3163&shop_method=pp&feat=5271-tn

Have fun and let us know how it turns out! My family always enjoys reading your posts.

I have great luck with ebay. Also, go to Froogle & type in tropical sheets. Tons to choose from.

Blu,
My aren't YOU a wise one!!! I promise I will be good and not take over your job! (I lie) 🙂
How FUN! Tho it is work, it is very rewarding and you will love every minute of it! 🙂
Hey Blu, you said he is in charge of the painting.....once you have chosen your base colors, you may want some input on the painting part. This is very important! I remember the place being white which is common in the Caribbean, but I also feel some houses are just TOO white! Both our places were white for years- no more! 🙂 Not to say white isn't a good choice.....

Iowa,
I would never have guessed LL Bean, will shoot over and see what they have! Great idea's from everyone so far, Keep them coming! There is a magazine called "Coastal Living", this would fit YOUR bill as it covers the whole US coast and the Caribbean!
Alot of people in the states do just that, a Caribbean room, so I know some of you will have more great input!

Right now, I am looking for a BRIGHT bed set. My colors are green, yellow and orange. Any input would be appreciated!

Have FUN! 🙂

Hey Blu,
Getting me to think..... I based alot of my color choices on the furniture I picked out (fabric colors), so that is something to think about as well. I think a coordinating house is nice. Others may differ on that, not sure.

I've often wondered if people on this forum have Caribbean themed rooms. I think it's fun to pick up things while down in the VI, and bring them home to add to your Caribbean room.

Thanks for the ideas everyone.

"Coastal Living" is an awesome magazine! if I could only hit that powerball...

I've seen some fun and kind of "tropical" prints from Tommy Hilfiger.

Hi Blu

Try this store in Mongoose Junction on St John 🙂 Just click on "home accessories" and "fabric" and you can see just a sample of what they have to offer - not cheap 🙁 - but nice, nice, nice.

I just happened to be shopping again (oops) and ran across these:

From Pier 1 -- Island Canopy Mosquito Net on sale for $23.83:

http://www.pier1.com/catalog/productdetail.aspx?oid=71306&returnURL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.pier1.com%2fcatalog%2fsearch.aspx%3ffh_location%3d%2f%2fpier1direct%2fen_US%2fcategories%3c%7b110492%7d%2fspecial%3e%7bon_sale%7d%26fh_search%3dbedding%26fh_search_pass%3dliteral%26fh_refpath%3dfacet_49924219%26fh_start_index%3d0%26fh_view_size%3d8%26fh_view%3dsearch&fh_location=//pier1direct/en_US/categories{on_sale}&fh_search=bedding&fh_search_pass=literal&fh_refpath=facet_49924219&fh_start_index=0&fh_view_size=8&fh_view=search

For Sherri -- Isaac Mizrahi for Target has lots of bright colors:

http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/ref=sc_pgp_r_4_0_13357781/601-3676035-6572121?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=1&asin=B00069PXUW

Although, this style could be worlds apart from what you need!

Target also has mosquito net canopies for $19.99:

http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/sr=1-1/qid=1173018891/ref=sr_1_1/601-3676035-6572121?ie=UTF8&asin=B0002PQZ5C

The Target items say, "free shipping." Woo hoo!

Can you tell I'm on a tight budget?! Always shopping for fun bargains...there's not much else to do in Iowa in the Winter. ha! 🙂 It's 12 degrees right now.

Have a great day everyone!

Ok, I'm checking out the links everyone in sending and this is great info - thanks again!

While clicking around, I came across this!!! It is a toilet seat. can you believe it? I think it is pretty and could be accented with blue water in the bowl (that blue drop-in thing). Sheeesh - I KNOW I have better things to do today. 😉

Blu, we are now moving on to Duvet covers (empty/without the comforter inside) instead of bedspreads. We've found a wide selection of bright / popping colors in Duvet covers. They're easier to care for, launder and not as heavy as bedspreads. And, you can find cool pillows, shams, etc. to match/complement. Checkout www.linensource.com.

LOL! There you go Blu, start with the potty and go with it!

Been busy cking out the different idea's, have more to go......But I seem to be bombing out! Can't get into Target Contemporary or the color orange. Linen Source is great for choices and they have a Bed Ensembles section, then hit tropical. I had 2 of the 7 choices! The Isla Saona is the set that is in SC now, VERY nice! Captiva is in RW's.
Everyone is coming up with some great idea's, Keep them coming! There were alot of choices at Macy's as well.
I love The Fabric Mill and will ck that out next!

My pick up for today, flt #1015 US Air from PHI is coming in way late tonight so I have been cking out sights!

Hey Bluwater,

Lucky you.............it seems you have all the luck in the world but here are a few of my suggestions based on our trips and what I've seen in St. John.

Company Store has the most amazing Caribbean colors when it comes to bed and bath. I'm renovating our home and putting in our master bed/bath colors from them that I've grown to love from the Caribbean.

There is also this really great store in St. John and for the life of me can't remember the name but if you walk from the ferry to the main bank in town, head down the road on the left, same side as the bank, go up a few steps and the store is on the right of the steps, they have the most amazing home decor items......lizards for the wall, table ware, candlesticks, etc. It is a great store and the owner and employees are so nice! I wish I could remember the name but it's drawing a blank right now.....I'll go through receipts in the next day or two and e-mail you back....They are fantastic and they are totally caribbean oriented.....It seems in talking to her that she can get just about anything need, want, desire for a caribbean home.

Jill,

PINK PAPAYA! That has to be it. On the way into the Lime Inn, right? That's a great store!

Blu...love the toilet seat! And your blue toilet water idea is great! ha!

Sherri...I know...that Isaac Mizrahi (sorta cheapo) stuff is the kind of thing that I think is a bit 'cheesy'. The right colors (sometimes), but the wrong style. It's too bad that someone doesn't come out with a line that's called, "St. Thomas hillside." The perfect mix of coordinating colors that include all the pinks, oranges, corals, blues, greens, etc. that we see when in the USVIs. They could steal the catch phrase, "easy, breezy, beautiful..." hee hee

We literally got the inspiration for our bedroom while dining at Morgan's Mango on St. John. The table cloths there were/are this great orangy coral color. So when I got home I found this perfect color called, "Bay Cora!" I wasn't sure about painting the room that color, but couldn't resist the name -- it was a sign! So, the bedroom has this dark coral color on the walls and bedding, etc. is dark brown with green. We love it -- not starfish and seashells, but it's still a bit of the islands at home for us. 🙂

Bluie: There is a whole other side of the Caribbean. If you look for an *old* book c. 1985 called "Caribbean Style", you will see that you can decorate without fishie quilts and hibiscus pillows and still be true to the Caribbean...
