My husband is retired and we were talking last night about coming down to St. Thomas for a month. I would love to do that and just have the opportunity to take our time and really explorer the islands.

Has anybody else ever done this? Some places seem really reasonable and I don't know why we haven't thought of this before.

I don't want to go on the relocation board because I'm not relocating...but this sure sounds like fun!

What do you all think?

1 month is not considered long term, so the newspaper apartments ads might not help. I would ask forumite "Lip" about Sail Away villa. He might give you a discount for a month. You could probably do a Sapphire condo, or Mahogany Run or Secret Harbour. VRBO is a good place to start - email the owners and ask them for a 1 month discount. Just 1 bedroom? Depends on time of year, too. Summer is more likely to get a good deal.

Hello Connie,

Also click on the St. Thomas link at the top of this site and choose Accommodations... actually here is the link https://www.vinow.com/stthomas/accommodations/. 😉 There are several vacation condos and apartments by owner listed there and some mention their willingness to do month rentals.

Ditto what Bluwater said about time of the year... during the off season there will be a greater willingness to do a month rental and offer a discount.

Definitely sounds like fun!

One detail: At Secret Harbour, units to be rented short term are required to be in the hotel management plan that is on property, so no VRBOs. Having read the questions about other condo/hotels, that is one way both condo associations and renters can be assured of some level of quality assurance.

I do know people who have rented for a month or more, though, through the hotel.

Future, it would just be myself and my husband. Maybe my daughter or another couple would come to visit, or even my Mother if I could get her on a plane. I'm thinking May.

It's not that I am thinking of moving to St. Thomas, it's just that I think we both need a break . One week vacations are nice, but so rushed. I would love to be able to relax for a change. We've had alot going on in the last 2 years and it would be nice to not worry about things at home (although I know I will).

Thanks all....husband and i will continue our talks about doing this month thing.

We were talking about how much it would be to rent a car for a month down there. Is it possible to take public transportation while were down there, get where we want and then rent a car for day trips if we feel like it?

We're not going to play the typical tourist thing...just take our time and do what we want to do WHEN we want to do it with no schedule.

Connie, I sent you a PM. If you want to consider Water Island as your "base", Flamingo Point Estate/Water Island Accomodations listed on VI NOW. We provide a vehicle for transporation on WI for no additional charge. Then you could rent a car for a day or whatever in STT whenever you need or take safari.
