I posted this on another board so if some of you read that board too this post might look familiar.

I would like to know about places to eat on STJ that represent the island atmosphere. The type of place that you just can't find in Oregon. I'm not all that interested in places with the best food, although it would be nice if it was at least decent. I can find good food anywhere. When I was there 5 years ago, the places that I remember was one where we ate in the courtyard and there was a very large iguana in the tree (not sure which restaurant that was but I think it was in Cruz Bay). Then there was the place by Coral Bay (it may have been Miss Lucys) where a goat wandered in while we were eating. Then there was the stand by the side of the road where we ate cow foot soup! A place right on the beach would be great also. You get the picture. I'm not necessarily looking for fine dinning but for places I can remember as unique to the Carribean and STJ. We will also be on STT for 2 nights so any places there will be great also.
P.S. We have a 5 year old so kid friendly would be good.

Thanks in advance.

Don't know if this will be frowned upon on this board but here is a link to some reviews of STJ restaurants from a different USVI board: http://www.virgin-islands-on-line.com/sj/sjrestreviews/index.shtml . If the powers-that-be don't like it then let me know. Am only posting it in the spirit of good will and of promoting tourism to the islands. I have no vested interest except for the hope that other people would post their reviews of restaurants and other places on this board so that people like me would know where to go next time we are down there. -patrick-

In my opinion, most St. John restaurants have a different feel than typical stateside restaurants. The only true corporate places to eat on St. John really are Subway, Westin, and Caneel so it is really hard to go wrong. Asolare has the best view and is a fine dining place which specializes in Asian fusion. Zozo's is Italian with a good view on the third floor. Rumblines and Banana Deck are very island-ish. Tamarind Court is where a lot of locals hang out. Pastry Gardens has a nice mini golf course. Uncle Joes BBQ has a local feel. To be honest, there are so many people from so many places that call STJ home that its hard to go anywhere on this rock and be wrong. Even Coral Bay is a fun place to have lunch or breakfast. I think you could eat out for a week straight on STJ and still feel like you missed out on a few places.

My husband and I ate at a restaurant in the Mongoose Junction in Cruz Bay and it was very open, great atmosphere, seemed like we were eating in a garden. There was a restaurant pet (seems to be common on St John), a cat, who didn't beg for food but affection. We are animal lovers and had a great time with this goofy cat. And there were families eating there, too.

The food was good, not spectacular, but I'm not picky either. Normal prices for the area.
