I visited Puerto Rico about 15 years ago and they had good coffee, but I keep reading people bring their own coffee. Is it hard to find good coffee (not Folgers) by the pound in St John? Should I bring a pound from home. We are tyring to travel light. LOL
But we may have to alter our plans a bit. We were planing to eat out more. However, we are staying in Coral Bay and it seems there will only be a couple of restaurants open. As we don't want to drive to Cruz Bay every night we will be cooking at our villa more often.
BTW what other staples would be good to bring? Also is there a good place to buy local veggies?
Thanks, Mel

St John Spice at the Ferry Dock has incredible coffee, I love the kiss of the Jumbie and it is great iced, too.

Love City mini market in Coral Bay will have most everything you need and the larger stores in Cruz Bay; Starfish, Dolphin, and Pine Peace will have everything you need.

PR coffees both ground and basic beans are readily available at Plaza Xtra on STT so if you're planning on renting a vehicle on STT and then going over to STJ that's always an option - or the markets on STJ may also carry good coffees if you're not making a drive-through on STT. I'll leave that for the STJ experts to answer!

KMart on St Thomas at Tutu Park Mall has a variety of the new Folgers coffees and they're not to be sneezed at by any standard. The Black Silk and the Gourmet Supreme are robust and quite outstanding.

As far as per lb fresh ground coffee, there were a couple of stores years ago which used to offer it but it would seem that the market didn't support the effort. Again, I'll defer to the STJ experts!

Coffee is very light to carry so if you have a favorite then pack it, Presume you're staying in a villa which will probably have a blender, so grinding up some of your favorite beans shouldn't be an issue for your morning/night cuppa!

As far as "staples" are concerned, you should find everything you need at the STJ markets and, although you may find prices rather higher than what you're used to where comparative mainland prices are concerned, I doubt that you'll truly gasp from any major sticker shock. Cereals and crackers are comparatively high, stateside milk is high and of course fresh imported veggies will be higher than you're used to.

As far as restaurant closings are concerned, many will still be open and you may just find some special places which remain open year-round which will titillate your palate no end. Cheers!

IMHO, Bad Ass Coffee Company at Yacht Haven Grande on STT has the best coffee on-island. Try the American Blend. They also sell it by the pound.

Enjoy your stay,
Heather

We always stick a few pots worth in a plastic bag stuffed in fin, shoe or something.
I can live without a bunch of things until everything gets settled in except for the morning coffee

You should go to Picaso's Coffee Bar in Smith Bay on STT. It's right down the road from Point Pleasant Resort or the Wyndham Sugar Bay. They have excellent coffee and you can get it by the pound-- grinded or the beans.

They also have the best shakes and smoothies! They have great flavored lattes.

Free WIFI!!! and a ATM machine!

Stop by and get a great cup of coffee!!
