Hi all -- I'm trying to figure out if we need to rent a 4 wheel drive car while staying on STJ in May. We're renting the Villa Chateau Margot which is up in the mountains on paved roads -- do you think we can get by with a car or should we rent a jeep with 4 wheel drive? Thanks for any help you can provide!!

I'd highly recommend a 4x4 jeep or similiar vehicle, although your road is paved if there is a rain storm the roads get very slippery and w/ all the switchbacks and turns (159 to be exact from Cruz Bay to Coral Bay on Centerline road) and steep grades it's nice to know you have the 4wheel if necessary. We go to STJ every year and each year we have the 4 wheel drive, our villa road requires it but we've used it several times during traveling on wet roads.

give your self some peace of mind, rent a 4 wheeler, I know where you are staying and you will be glad to have the 4 wheel drive.

i vote for 4 wheel even if your road is smooth as a baby's bottom. it will give you more control and confidence in case you need it almost anywhere on the island!

Looks like you've made up your mind and 4x4 jeep is the way to go. There are a lot of steep hills that can get slippery with a morning shower or when you need that extra umph to get to the top. They also give you room to get over to avoid the water trucks and are great for squeezing into little parking spaces in Cruz Bay or at the beaches.
