We have a 2 year old and will be visiting STVI in August. Are there activities, day trips, anything that can be done with a 2 year old?

Hello Wendi,

Definately the beach; you can pick up various beach toys at K-mart on island. Coral World is a nice option with children. Paradise Point has a bird show your 2 year old might enjoy and you might enjoy the view, drinks/lunch there (bird show is only on twice during the day; 10:30am and 1:30pm and August's hours are when cruise ships are in port). Some of the daysails welcome children, just e-mail the various ones you thought you might want to do and ask. You can see a nice selection of daysails by clicking on St. Thomas in the blue bar at the top of this page and then choose daysails from the options. You can visit Emerald Beach and then spend a little bit at the small playground at the far end of the beach (swings, slides, usually lots of iguanas on the rocks by the water, there is a small waterpark area too but I don't know the hours for the waterpark area).

You didn't say when in August but the Chilli Cookoff is on the 28th. If you are on island its fun for both adults and children. Takes place on Bolongo Bay and starts at noon.

You're right, he will love the bird show. We will be there from the 19th - 25th so we'll miss the chili cook off, but I hope to keep him plenty busy. From what I have seen and read, the water is pretty calm. Are there other activities you know of?

My grand ma who was born in 1869 told me ( before her untimely passing at age 101) that 2 year old boys should be sealed into a barrel and fed through the "bung hole" until they are 5 years old. for those of you who don't know what a "bung hole" is...it is the small opening at the end of the barrel.

Since my father was the only 2 year old boy she ever raised I have often wondered about my own upbringing.

Just trying to help.

Hello Wendi,

There is a big fishing tournament in August and a few other things but not really 2 year old friendly. When you get to St. Thomas airport, in the baggage claim, pick up the St. Thomas/St. John this Week magazine; it usually has a weekly schedule for the current month - perhaps some other things might be listed that your family could attend.

I recall my 2 yr old yelling "Mommy, wuk, Dinosaurs!" from Sapphire Beach.(iguanas)

He'll love the dinosaurs!

On our last visit to STT my son was 2. We took the ferry over to Tortola and he loved it. I think is was about an hour each way. We rented a car there and visited some of the beaches. I think if was Brewers Bay there were alot of pelicans diving for fish. He loved watching them fly around then dive into the water. He also loved seeing the wild chickens and goats running around. I will have to say I wouldn't let him swim at the beaches, because the waves were stronger on the beaches we visited there. Also, Tortola was much more rustic than the US Virgin Islands. So if you have a picky eater you might bring some things for the day.

Mageans on STT was a good beach for very small children. Also, Trunk Bay on STJ was good. Waves were bigger than at Magean, but not enough to knock him over.

We took New Horizons with our 2 year old son a few weeks ago! They were really great and we had a blast! The captain brought us to shore in the dinghy so we didn't have to swim in. We took turns snorkeling while one of us played with him on the beach, He even napped on the ride back to STT.:-)

Did New Horizons charge you for your 2 year old? I checked their website and it only said 12 and under.

Hi Wendi,
The water at Trunk Bay St. John and the northern beaches (and I would imagine on St.Thomas too) has very little wave action -if any at all- in August and the summer months. My husband and I were there last year for our honeymoon and are going back on 8/13 with my parents. I have not been in the winter but that's when i hear the wave action is stronger. Also Little Mayo is good for kids too.
