Hello! My fiance' and I are planning our honeymoon to the US VI for June or July 2011. We were doing fine with our self planning/search until we got to some of the negative ratings about a few of the places we had researched such as the 1. Frenchman's Reef & Morning Star Marriott Beach Resort, 2. Best Western Emerald Beach Resort, and 3. Best Western Carib Beach Resort. I am fully aware that everyone is accustomed to different tastes and styles of living, however some of the comments were unbelievable! We are planning to stay for @least 6days and we are so nervous that we will do something wrong during our planning that will cause us to be disappointed and not have a wonderful honeymoon. We are currently looking into staying on the island of St. Thomas and do some island hopping on the other islands, but we are open to suggestions in staying somewhere else. We were really into the idea of staying @ Best Western Emerald Beach Resort because we want to stay on a beach front no matter where we finally decide on. Can anyone help us out with hotel/resort accommodation suggestion on any particular island, any tips or pointers that we may need to know, car rental suggestions, activities ideas, or anything that made your trip amazing that you could willingly pass along to us. WE WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE IT! Our goal for this trip is to just have a good, relaxing, romantic, fun adventure/time with one another as new husband and wife. If our ages help any, we are 25. Thanks so much in advance to all who comment to help us out !!!!

I would stay at Crystal Cove on Sapphire Beach. There is more action at the east end. Look on VRBO for possible places to stay.

My wife and I spent our honeymoon on St Thomas in 2000. We have been back every year since and several times more than one trip a year. We love the islands and managed to stay for about 3 1/2 months one year. Our favorite time to go is actually June, July and even August as there are fewer people there. We have been on St Thomas in January, February and May and found that the weather varies from month to month but only slightly. The first trip we made was in July and my wife found it a little warm but enjoyed the cooling breezes. She seems to have gotten used to the warmer weather rather well and we regularly run approx 3 to 5 miles every day while we are there since. Everyone is going to have an opinion as to where you should stay while on the islands. Every resort and villa has their own unique positives as well as negatives. We have stayed at several resorts and a few villas (on St John) and always had a good time. We stayed at Pavilion and Pools on our honeymoon. She had been looking in a travel magazine and I happened to have been looking on line at the same time and we both found P&P at the same time. It was fate. We completely enjoyed the privacy and the unit we had. It had a private pool with a view of St John and had two walls that were completely glass so the sunrises were amazing. This was my wife's first experience in the ocean and she learned how to snorkel the first day. Once she got the hang of it we hit new beaches on St Thomas and St John every day and we swam/snorkeled for 4 to 5 hours each day. We rented a car from Dependable Car Rental (and have done so every trip since) and I think we drove every road on St Thomas and nearly every road on St John just exploring. We saw the good and the bad and believe me the good out weighs the bad by a million to one. We have since taken up SCUBA diving and actually leave our gear with one of our many island friends (we're warm water divers). We have found the islanders to be warm and friendly but then again we don't act like tourists (I grew up in a tourist community and the locals hated the tourists). We have found that by meeting them on "their terms" and respecting island customs we have made many friends.

The islands are a wonderful place for a honeymoon and we have ours every year. Just remember to bring your common sense with you and "Keep to the LEFT" when your driving.

First off I wanted to say trip advisor.com truly is valuable. We just returned from another trip to the VI and I posted a few things on there...perhaps I am one to take my reviews seriously because I know how important it is to me to read honest reviews before I travel. Do not discount trip advisor.com! I have a recent post on the BW Caribe. That is not a hotel I would recommend to honeymooners, especially. You can find better properties to stay at for 6 days.

My husband and I honeymooned in the summer of 2005 in the VI via a chartered yacht. Another great way to visit is by renting a small villa on either STT or STJ.

As for car rental, definitely do so. I HIGHLY recommend Amalie Car Rental on STT. The owners are super and the vehicles top notch.

If you are interested in my reviews let me know. Good luck!

My husband has been going to St John and staying at Caneel since he was a little boy in the 70's, and when we met in 2001 we went for the first time, Caneel was totally out of my price range(we hadn't been together very long, I was a divorced single mom working as a really low paid EMT and I paid my own way) and we stayed at Emerald Beach. I fell in love with it and St Thomas and St John. We have been back many times with his family, my family and now our kids. I love Emerald Beach and quite honestly while I do now have a fondness for Caneel and St John, I still would rather be at Emerald Beach. I think maybe it's because every room is beach front with a balcony...you know that no matter what room you get, you're ocean front...not ocean view or perhaps garden view like at another resort, but ocean front. In fact, we can hear the waves laying in bed with the sliding glass doors closed. I just love it.
We're renting a villa in St John this November, because as a family we've outgrown being in one hotel room for a whole week, but we're staying 8 nights and our last night on St Thomas we're staying at Emerald Beach and I can't wait to go back. My parents are going with us and they love Emerald Beach too. Some friends of mine are going to St Thomas for the first time with us and they're staying at Emerald Beach...out of all the resorts they looked at they chose Emerald Beach.
The beach there is beautiful and so is the pool area. And I have to say that their open air restaurant, sitting at a table down by the big open shutters is my favorite spot on St Thomas.
It's a Best Western. Don't expect anything more. If you think that a Best Western suddenly morphed into a 5 star resort, you'll be disappointed. It's a Best Western that's ocenfront on a gorgeous beach. But the rooms aren't cramped (especially with one bed) and they've always been really clean and in good shape and I believe they've remodelled since we've been there last.
As another poster said, it'd be a great base for you if you're going to go out and explore the island. I would avoid the Best Western Carib Beach. It just looks a little dodgy to me when I go by it. I've heard some really good things about it, but I can't say I'd stay there, even for just a one night's stay before flying out.
I know that the beach at Frenchman's leaves alot to be desired....theres no way it could compare to Lindberg Bay at Emerald Beach Resort. I often see Lindberg Bay listed on the list of top beaches on the island.
And as far as airport traffic goes, in my 4 stays at Emerald Beach, I've never been disturbed by it, the airport shuts down by 9 oclock.
Congrats on your wedding and whatever you choose, I hope you have a great honeymoon!

My wife and I just returned 2 weeks ago from our wedding and honeymoon at Sapphire Beach Club. Originally, we had scheduled our trip to north Florida, but then the Deep Water Horizon sunk and the oil spill ruined our plans. At the last minute, we searched VRBO and found a wonderful condo at Sapphire Beach Resort; the unit was on the second floor, just 20 feet from the beach. We could NOT have been happier with our choice, and are trying to figure out how to squeeze the budget so that we don't have to wait another year to return. Our wedding was perfect for us; we were both barefoot, as were the minister and photographer, when we were married out on Prettyclip Point (the point of rocks jutting out into Sapphire Beach). Highly recommend this style of trip for those on a budget and like to do things on their own. We really like the adventure of jumping on the ferry to do a day trip to St. John, we even hiked into Solomon Beach while there. We would walk up the hill to the side of the road and jump on a safari bus which would take you into Red Hook for a $1 each, or into Havensight or downtown Charlotte Amalie for a whopping $2 each. If we were in a big hurry, or had groceries, or shopping bags, we would hail a taxi to get back to the condo (the safaris only go one direction, you can get back eventually, but you might end up seeing more of the island than planned, but that's an adventure too!)

On St. John, you have Coconut Coast Villas, Hillcrest Guest House and Garden by the Sea.
