Will be in St. Thomas mid Dec on a cruise ship from 8am-11pm any suggestions on what to do? My wife and I are 30 and don't want to just sit around the beach all day.

LOL 😉

I am sorry to laugh, but trust me you will have plenty to do - if you so choose to not sit at a beach all day. If you would like to go to a beautiful beach at least for a few hours - my suggestion is go to St. John via a ferry. Cinnamon Bay is my favorite and is free. There is Trunk Bay which is one of the top ten beaches in the world according to the Travel Channel. There are restaurants, shopping, snorkeling, hiking, to name a few on St. John as well. On St. Thomas there is Coral World, too much shopping (as if that existed), many restaurants, beaches, snorkeling, parasailing, day sails (or half day sails) on wonderful sailboats, wonderful stops and panoramic views of the island for great pictures, Paradise Point, art galleries, tours via safari taxi's, and even golfing!!! Since you are staying til 11:00 p.m. , I would suggest going to a restaurant with a view to see the lights at night. It is really a cool experience. It gets dark by 7:00 p.m. here. so you will have time. I am 30 as well and just moved here. I still have many things on my to do list to enjoy the time I spend here. Oh yeah, and stop at the dairy to have a milkshake - you will really miss out if you don't! 😉 Have fun and wear sunblock even if you are at the beach one hour!!! (I burned in half an hour - don't ask - long story)

Sorry, I used my husband's login by accident. This is his wife Teresa - the reason you see Island Chris is because I forget to login. Silly me.

Teresa... you have created interest with the famous milkshakes!! YUMMMY!

The Dairy has a small stand that sells milk, icecream and MILKSHAKES with or without alcohol on the corner of the road that goes to Magens Bay on St. Thomas... just past Magens Point Resort.

Matt - what sorts of things would you and your wife like to do? Watersports, hiking, historical tour, shopping?

Hello All,

This is Teresa, I have forgotten my login password again - so am borrowing my husband's.

Matt,

You can take a ferry from Charlotte Amalie to St. John or take a ferry from Red Hook to St. John. Charlotte Amalie is closer to where your ship docks. The first one takes about 45 minutes to St. John and the latter takes about 20 minutes. To get to Red Hook you need to take a taxi so if you figure that into your time it comes close to being the same either way. The catch is that to and from Red Hook you can catch a ferry until I think 11:00 p.m. and Charlotte Amalie until 4:00? You can buy round trip tickets at either place. Your cruise ship might be able to give you info on this, otherwise just pick up a free tourist guide anywhere here. They usually have the schedules, prices, taxi prices, etc. There are many beaches on St. Thomas too, so just depends on your schedules, but I still recommend St. John 😉 Next spring on the Travel channel you will see Trunk Bay featured and again one of the top ten beaches in the world. Something interesting to tell family friends that you visited - no? I should work in tourism, but really - I have emailed many of my friends back in the mid-west and convinced them to come visit based on making them watch the travel channel. Wasn't hard.

I also wanted to mention scuba diving if you would like to see some sea wildlife! Like I said, you will not lack for something to do here. I wish you good weather - not hard either - on your vacation.

We like active activitys but don't want to be around a bunch of drunks. Can you buy one way fares for the ferry eg take the Charlotte Amalie one out and the Red Hook one back? Just thought maybe there was one "awsome" tour that shouldn't be missed?

Matt: What is an "active activity" to you? There are plenty of things to do. What do YOU want to do? The cruise ships have packaged tours. You may set up your own tour also!!

Matt,

You can buy one way tickets without problem. If you can list what you and your wife want or like to do, it would be easier to make recommendations. You will see when you get here that there is too much to do in one vacation, but try you must! 😉

Thinking of maybe some snorkel, sightseeing mainly. I've heard good things about Godfrey tours but since our ship is in port so long thought maybe we should hit St. Johns??? We don't have beaches here in Alberta Canada so any beach will be nice to us. What about bike rentals?

Hello Matt,

There is a Mountain Bike excursion on St. John... but would recommend it if you are an active cyclist - St. John is very mountainous.

Suggestions for St. John; rent a car for the day and beach hop and drive around the whole island, have lunch there. Or take a taxi out to maybe Cinnamon Bay and hike a trail in that area and then back to the beach for swimming and relaxing. Or you could start hiking from Cruz Bay up and around to Honeymoon and then Cannel Bay; where you could have lunch and enjoy the beach and you can take a taxi tour from there of the island before going back to Cruz Bay to maybe do some window shopping and then catching the ferry bck.

We are planning to stay for 8 days this sept 11-19 and were wondering if you would stay the whole time on St john or most of the time on St Thomas and just may a day trip to St John?

It depends on what you are interested in. Beaches, snorkeling, hiking, etc. takes you to STJ. Shopping, night life, etc. takes you to STT. There are shops, restaurants and bars on STJ, but not as many to choose from. I noticed other postings mentioned many of the STJ restaurants are closed during September so you might want to research that more.
Unless you have already made arrangements, getting something (villa, etc.) on STJ may be difficult. Not impossible, just limited. Personally, I would stay on STJ and travel to STT if you can find reasonable accommodations. There are more hotel choices on STT.

John: The best thing about the Virgins (US and British) is that they are very easy to travel around. If you have never been to this part of the Caribbean, get out and see a bunch! Day trips are easy to do.

P.S. As Chris says, it will be very quiet. Everywhere.

Hi!

My husband and I are first timmers to this island. We are going on a seven day cruise and one of the stops is St. Thomas from 8AM - 6PM. What would you recommend in the time frame? I know we would like to check out St. John's and also parts of St. Thomas. Want to do some snorkeling while we are there.
Any suggestions?

Thanks.

When my Mom and Dad travel, they just show up at the place and figure out what to do once they get there. That's the simple way to travel.

Hello Amy,

You don't want to do to many things as your day will be rushed. What you can do is head over to St. John in the early am... do an island tour by taxi - there are taxis waiting at the ferry dock in Cruz Bay so easy to arrange once you arrive. Have the taxi drop you off at Cinnamon Bay, Trunk Bay - or which ever beach you like. Do some snorkeling (the two beaches named have snorkel rental gear most of the year, with the exception of a few weeks in September when the kiosk close for off season; other beaches do not have amenities that are in the National Park). Head back to Cruz Bay and take the ferry back to St. Thomas and do an island tour that starts at Red Hook ferry dock (taxis are usually waiting there too) around the island and get dropped back at your cruise ship... if you have time, do some window shopping... if not head back to the ship. You can do this on your own, easily - just keep track of the time you need to be back on St. Thomas and at the ferry dock.
