After spending 6 nights on St John in April, I need a recommendation for 1 night on St Thomas. After the slower pace of the first 5 days, the kids might like a big pool and lots of glitz and activity to wind up the family vacation.
Any ideas for a place that will be convenient to the airport and not get us into traffic jams as we travel from St John and then to the airport the next day?
I've read a little about Frenchmans Reef. How convenient is it?
I would appreciate any input.

Hello,

The most convienient to the airport would be one of the Best Westerns - Carib Beach or Emerald Beach Resort - they both have pools but are not glizty. Frenchmans Reef would offer the glizy environment - its maybe 15-20 minutes drive to the airport depends on the traffic.

Thanks Islander. Do you know how long our travel time will be on a Friday from Cruz Bay to Frenchmans including traffic. And then from resort to airport. We will have a rental car that we will be bringing back from St john and turning in at ( or near) the airport.

Hello John,

Cruz Bay to Red Hook on the car barge is about 30 minutes. Drive from Red Hook to Frenchmans Reef maybe 25-40 minutes depending on the route you take and traffic. Resort to airport 15-20 minutes. I don't drive those routes often but I have - I am guestimating on the times - if someone else drives these routes often and can offer a more precise estimate for a Friday and Saturday please do.

Thanks Islander, very useful information. I don't want to spend most of our last full day just trying to change accomodations. This sounds reasonable.
Any other resort type hotel we should look into besides Frenchmans reef? I would like tto find something special but in the $200-300 per night range.

Hello,

You could try something closer to the Red Hook ferry dock which would get your to the hotel for more vacationing quicker but take a litlte longer to get to the airport. Maybe Wyndham Sugar Bay would work. There is also Sapphire and Secret Harbor which are less "glitzy" then Frenchmans but very nice properties with great beaches for the kids and pools.

I would suggest Secret Harbor which is just around the corner from Red Hook and has a marvelous quiet water beach, good snorkeling, and other activities could arranged.

I don't know the rates but they have beach front type units, that would make it very special. So you have a ferry ride from St.John, an within a few minutes off the ferry you'd be pulling into Secret Harbor.

Safe the drive to airport for the travel day.
