Q: Do ferries run on holidays, i.e. Christmas and Thanksgiving?
The ferry between St. Thomas and St. John does operate on holidays. The ferry to Water Island does not run on some holidays, see schedule for more details. Ferries to the BVI do operate on holidays.
Q: From the St. Thomas airport, which is the closest ferry to get to St. John?
There are two ferry departure points on St. Thomas for passenger ferries bound for St. John. They are Crown Bay and Red Hook. Crown Bay is closest, about 1.1 miles from the St. Thomas Airport. From the St. Thomas Airport to the Red Hook ferry is about 10 miles. Distance aside, look at the schedules to decide what works for your itinerary. The Crown Bay schedule has limited daily departures, while the Red Hook ferry to St. John runs every hour on the hour from early morning to midnight.
Q: From the Cruise Ship dock on St. Thomas, which is the closest ferry to get to St. John?

Q: Do we need reservations?
For the St. John-St. Thomas ferry you generally do not need a reservation, unless you have a very large group. Same for the Water Island ferry. The car barges between St. John and St. Thomas, likewise, do not require reservations; however, one of the car barges as of March 2019 is beginning to test doing online bookings. For USVI-BVI ferries reservations are generally not required but some of the BVI ferries will take a reservation. Contact them directly to ask. Reservations are required for ferry from St. Thomas to Anegada, BVI.

Q: What is capacity of the Water Island ferry? I have a big group.
The Water Island ferry can accommodate 25 passengers. If you have a big group you should call in advance to give them notice.

Q: I am arriving late in St. Thomas and will miss the last ferry to St. John… or to BVI; what are my options?
If you will miss the last ferry connection to your destination your options are to stay in a hotel on St. Thomas and catch the ferry on the next day of operation; to take a water taxi; and for the BVI you can also take an Inter-Island Airline.
