Buck Island, located 2 miles south of St. Thomas, was established as a wildlife refuge in 1969 due to its value for migratory birds. It is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Birdwatchers may see tropic birds, frigate birds, laughing gulls and others in the vicinity of the island. Buck Island is 45 acres and characterized by cactus, shrubs and grasslands. A Danish built lighthouse is located on the island; it is not operational and closed to the public. The islands’ rocky coastline is surrounded by crystal clear water; home to a variety of fish and sea turtles! This fascinating marine world attracts visitors to Buck Island. Snorkeling excursions and diving trips are available from St. Thomas.
